Reviews Summary

Signal Box Newcastle is widely praised for its exceptional food, particularly fresh oysters and flavorful mains like risotto and Thai beef salad. Diners consistently highlight the outstanding service from a friendly and attentive staff. While most experiences are highly positive, some reviews mention issues with noise levels and a less than ideal response from staff regarding guest celebrations.

"I took my Nan who was visiting from Samoa. Food was top notch, oysters were fresh. The mignonette was the best I've ever had! Risotto had plenty of depth and the right amount of saltiness! Nan loved her pan fried Tuna with salad (yum). The wait staff were friendly and great at conversation making. Highly recommend."

"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A must-visit in Newcastle!

The Signal Box is a standout in Newcastle’s dining scene. The menu offers a great variety and has something for everyone, everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and the prices are reasonable for the quality, which makes it even better.

But what really made the experience exceptional was the service. The staff were warm, welcoming, and you can see they genuinely enjoy what they do, and it shows.

It’s refreshing to be in a place where the team is clearly passionate and takes pride in creating a great experience for guests.

A huge thank you to The Signal Box team for making our visit such a memorable one. We’ll definitely be back!"

"Tried this café in July 2024 during my visit to Newcastle. Booking is recommended, otherwise you might be seated outdoors—which isn’t ideal during winter. The food was great! I enjoyed the Thai fried beef salad—the beef was juicy and flavourful. It was my first time here, and I’d definitely recommend it."

Newcastle's storied past - Visit Newcastle

The adorable state-heritage listed Signal Box located at Newcastle East’s Market Lawns (alight at the Queens Wharf Light Rail stop) is enjoying a new lease of life as a stylish harbourside bistro. Housed in a historic working railway signal box built in 1936, it operated until the Newcastle heavy rail line closed in 2014. At the time it was the only Type O signal box with an electro-pneumatic miniature lever power interlocking machine – basically a whiz bang innovation reflective of its importance as one of NSW’s busiest railway precincts.
