When a few young fellas opened this bold modern Asian eatery in 2017, they likely had no clue it would become one of the hottest spots in town. Run by former MasterChef Australia finalist Matt Sinclair and his two pals Jeremiah Jones and Michael Rickard, Sum Yung Guys does a buzzing trade any night of the week. The chefs put a local twist on pan-Asian classics, like the Mooloolaba prawn toast with gochujang mayo; fried rice with juicy Moreton Bay bugs; and the signature SYG red curry with lamb shank, apple eggplant and snake beans.

While Sum Yung Guys may have been the subject of backlash in the past, it would be unfair to overlook the quality on offer at what is undoubtedly one of the best restaurants in Noosa. The energetic atmosphere and kitchen hits immediately, as does the complex waft of aromas creeping around the space like a sillage of luxury perfume. Popular picks from the tight, modern Asian menu include the Indian inspired Keralan spiced curry, flavoured with apple eggplant, tofu, zucchini, and snake beans, and the tender ‘Crying Tiger’ pork belly with nam jim jaew glaze and fried garlic.

Earlier this year, Matt Sinclair and the boys headed on a tasty tour of Southeast Asia, kicking off in Thailand, where they picked up some inspired new recipes to roll out in their menu—so you know you’re in for a truly authentic culinary experience. Our favourites are the Southern Thai Prawn Curry; Aromatic Red Curry of Confit Duck; and the Sour Yellow Curry with silken tofu.

I have to admit, we only visited once during our time living in Noosa.

When you meet Sum Yung Guys – it’s easy to see why the food is simply amazing. Their passion for contemporary Asian inspired cuisine is inspirational. But dig a little deeper and there’s more to this place than superb food – Sum Yung Guys are definitely greater than the sum of their parts.

Over the hill at Sunshine Beach there’s also foodie flair afoot, with the boutique dining enclave recently welcoming the arrival of Sum Yung Guys. This fun, Asian-infused restaurant has a focus on share plates and features a vibrant atmosphere to complement the mouth-watering menu.

An array of Asian flavours are on offer at Noosaville’s uber popular Sum Yung Guys (whose team includes Queensland Master Chef runner-up Matt Sinclair). For modern Australian cuisine (including exceptional seafood), Ricky’s River Bar and Restaurant in Noosa Heads leads the way.

A former Masterchef contestant is behind this Asian-inspired joint, which easily wins the title for Noosa’s buzziest restaurant. It packs out every night of the week, so book well in advance if you’re chasing its flaky roti, fragrant Thai-style curries and fancy prawn toast.

It’s always great to find a place with plenty of gluten free options and an understanding of coeliac safety. It’s a bonus when the food is as good as it was here. Thoroughly enjoyed the fried rice with Moreton Bay bugs, the short ribs and the tasty rice cakes.

Both times I have been to Noosa, Sum Yung Guys has been consistently incredible. Truly, some of the best food I have had in Australia (and I love to eat out). The food is out of this world and the cocktails are a bit light on booze but absolutely delicious.

They are moving from their Sunshine Beach spot into Noosaville and open at the end of April 2021. A new building and fit-out brings with it a refreshed menu. I met up with Matt Sinclair, one of the chef-owners, walking through the almost-complete site.

Rickys River Bar and Restaurant* is perched on the banks of the Noosa River and is perfect for long lunches or sunset cocktails, while Sum Yung Guys* serves multi award-winning Asian Fusion fare and an extensive bar list.

With cracking Asian fusion cuisine, music and delicious cocktails, Sum Yung Guys is so much more than the sum of its parts. Their fun and flavourful eats are the perfect way to wake up after an afternoon nap by the pool.

For some more relaxed and trendy vibes, head to Miss Moneypennys on Hastings Street or Sum Young Guys in Sunshine Beach. To go a bit more upmarket, there’s Sails, Noosa Beach House, ALBA by Kuruvita and Cafe Le Monde.
