Black Duck Brewing might be tucked away in another industrial corner of Port Macquarie but you’d never know it while you're sitting in in the sun staring at the surrounding gum trees. With eight taps – and most of the beers referencing birds in some way – a couple of tasting paddles is the perfect launching point from which to discover what’s been brewing. There are regular brewery tours; that said, owner and brewer Al Owen will be more than happy to take you through what he’s made at pretty much any time – if you’re really lucky, his Great Dane Storm will come along for the ride too.

Beach House Grill - Once this place stops serving food (see Eating), it becomes the most up to date and fashionable bar in Port Macquarie. It has a great location facing the town square the river. Playing a good mix of up to the minutes electronic music, serving great German soft drinks and with its night views of the Hastings River, you can't go past this place in the CBD.

Part bar, part cafe, The Beach House is one of the best places to eat in Port Macquarie. While open for lunch and dinner, it’s best enjoyed at sunset with a cocktail or two in hand. Bites here are casual, and paired with views of the neighbouring Hastings River.

Port definitely has the tropical vibes, but a storm did roll in that afternoon – not that it was a problem, because The Beach House was open for business and had room to squeeze us in on the verandah for a drink and a nibble.

This place is already recognised as a favourite hangout for sunset drinks. But few are aware of its reputation as a bastion for barista-made coffees. Port Macquarie is a mecca for water sports such as surfing and kayaking.

Another restaurant we tried was The Grill, serving steak, ribs and seafood with views over the harbour. And for coffee, try Social Grounds Coffee and The Westport Club Takeaway, two eateries that we enjoyed.

Other great viewing spots are Town Green near Lady Nelson Wharf, or how about enjoying sunset with a cold drink at The Beach House pub which has uninterrupted views of the Hastings River.

Do it in the afternoon so you can time your arrival at The Beach House bar and diner for a cold beer or cocktail at an outdoor table as you watch the sun sink into the river.
