What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
ANTE is highly praised for its exceptional food, attentive service, and unique listening bar atmosphere, making it a standout dining destination. While many rave about the flavorful dishes and extensive sake list, some note the pasta portions can be small for the price.
"The bread was so good we got a second serving. The potato crisps was so well made. The prawn pasta was so buttery and delicious. The cod was cooked to perfection. A lovely atmosphere and great service. I definitely would come back!"

"Amazing experience at ANTE, the food, the service, the drinks, and the subtle music while dining. 10/10 experience! Would recommend the shiitake tagliatelle. If you’re into it, you can also ask for a sake tasting and they’ll select 3 different types of sake for you to try."
Jasmijn T
"First of all, you can’t go wrong with their sake selections. Truly amazed as how they can categorise the profiles accordingly and recommend you as to what should be paired with what food accordingly.
Second, i admire the vibes and atmosphere to the space. Specifically love that they have vinyl dj set playing curated jazz, jazz funk to exotic jazz.
Their services do not lag behind the ambience and atmosphere either.
Last but not least i will highly recommend their red emperor calamansi crudo and mushroom tagliatelle. The fried potato mochi is also a nice touch. Although it seems that they change their menu quite often according to seasons which is why i am looking forward to coming back and tasting different dishes to the seasons changes.
Conclusion is that this establishment is a must try!"

Though the cool Newtown spot by Matt Young and Jemma Whiteman's also serves excellent food. Sake, records and moody vibes right in the middle of Newtown, ANTE offers the perfect escape from the bustle on King Street. Modelled after the Japanese concept of jazzu kissa, which is a jazz cafe or bar where people come for the records just as much as they do the bar, you will have no shortage of options to choose from, with over 65 sake from 21 sake breweries across Japan available, as well as other spirits such as whisky and gin. It comes as no surprise that the food menu is also designed to complement the sake, a rich Japanese influence on the menu with flavours like kanzuri, mirin and katsuobushi all making an appearance.
Sydney's most exciting restaurant openings of the year so far
As dark as Japanese charcoal and as pure as Junmai sake, Ante ups the ante for "the small bar that could". With the double whammy of owner Matt Young's obsessions for sake and jazz on vinyl, and a thoughtful chef like Jemma Whiteman (Pinbone, Lankan Filling Station) in the open kitchen, there's a distilled purity of expression here that makes it a standout. Robata-grilled arrosticini lamb skewers with roasted bamboo salt, and prawn casarecce pasta with fermented chilli and clementine are typical of the playful, textural dishes, each balanced on a knife-edge with umami and acidity.
