What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
LuMi Dining is lauded for its inventive Italian-Japanese fusion cuisine, artistic presentation, and intimate waterfront ambiance, making it a top choice for special occasions. While many praise the unique flavors and attentive service, some reviews mention occasional inconsistencies in service speed and friendliness, and a few found certain dishes to be overly rich or salty, impacting the overall value for the price.
"Had an unforgettable birthday dinner! The food was WONDERFUL and truly unique - definitely not your average dining experience. Presentation was stunning, and every bite was a delight. The cocktails were excellent too! The atmosphere was lively, but the noise level was a bit high due to a large group nearby. Would be great if they had a quieter area for tables, but overall, the experience was top-notch. Staff were friendly and made our celebration special. If you're looking for a memorable dining experience, look no further! 5/5 stars!"

"Food was tasty, interesting, and visually appealing. It didn't make you say "whoa" as much as you were like, "What is that flavor and that one?" as you tasted each item. But that's how fine dining is sometimes. I would say the egg custard was the best I've had.
The staff were very polite and professional, and the atmosphere was very nice. We showed up without reservation, and they accommodated us and even made some minor changes for some dietary restrictions last minute, which were appreciated.
Actually, I HAD made a booking through Open Table but when I checked, it turned out it was for a Lumi in San Diego 😅. Also, for some reason, I thought I was going to a Yakiniku restaurant but was pleasantly surprised to find it was a kind of Japanese fusion fine dining restaurant serving a degustation menu 😄😄
At the time we arrived, we were able to have the Snack Menu - one of their tasting menus - but don't let the name fool you; it was quite impressive in its own right. I could be wrong, considering that I had no idea about what this place was before I got there, but it seems that they only do tasting menus, though you can add things to them as well.
All in all, it was a very nice experience. 👌"

"Absolutely top tier casual fine dining. There are simply not enough words to describe the variety, tastes, and textures that came with each unique dish. The superlative blend between Japanese and Italian cuisines is simply wonderful.
The location is very accessible, and the service was very good and attentive, with every dish being explained when it is served to you.
Hurry up and make your booking if you haven't already."

20 Restaurants Doing the Best Lunch in Sydney Right Now
Reviews of LuMi often allude to a quote – “You are confined only by the walls you create” – that’s etched onto the sliding glass doors that surround the handsomely appointed dining room. On a warm summer night you’ll find those doors flung open, and the irony isn’t lost. It's a fitting metaphor for a technically faultless dining experience with no constraints, one of the city’s very best, where the only rule seems to be that there aren’t any.

The scene: Owned by the previous head chef from Ormeggio at the Spit, LuMi Bar & Dining offers guests the feeling of dining on the water without getting so much as a little toe wet. The exclusive setting and tall sliding glass doors really do give you the sensation of floating on the harbour, surrounded by the gentle undulating waves of the water that provide the perfect soundtrack to your meal. The interior of the restaurant is decorated with mid-century Italian purple and green textiles which contrast starkly against with the concrete and timber furnishings, reflecting the style of cuisine which is also an eclectic fusion of ideas most often referred to as Italian-Japanese.
Year in Review | Best Dishes of 2019
Readers of this blog know that LuMi Dining is one of my perennial favourites, so it’s no surprise that most of its dishes contend for a spot on this list. While even its bread is worthy of dish-of-the-year status, the crown for 2019 would have to go to its pork & fermented shiitake-filled pithivier, which plays perfectly to the restaurant’s Italian-with-a-touch-of-Japanese sensibilities. It’s as gorgeous as it looks: the pastrytastes like it’s 50% butter and probably is, the filling a luscious, palate-filling mouthful of umami-esque, porcine savouriness.

You are confined only by the walls you create" reads the text printed on the glass walls hemming in LuMi. It's a little hammy, sure, but the mood is right on: in bringing a Japanese mood to bear on Italian cuisine, Federico Zanellato treads territory few chefs dare to. But his scope is far wider: a single scallop, sliced and put back together with interleaved slivers of rhubarb and jalapeño, for example, is listed on the menu as ceviche, but plays like sashimi, and spins in a new wave crudo direction with a base of buffalo curd and rhubarb vinegar.
