Reviews Summary

Diners praise GYO for its excellent and fresh Japanese food, particularly the sushi and tapas, within a contemporary and upscale setting. However, some reviews highlight significant issues with service speed and management, with multiple reports of long waits and chaotic service, alongside a mention of a lack of a liquor license.

"GYO still going strong as Townsville's best casual & authentic Japanese food restaurant.

If you want to have a relaxed & fun night out in Townsville, go & visit GYO at it's great location adjacent to the Stand.

With a great selection of Japanese beers & cocktails at very reasonable prices, its best to sit back & take your time. Order a selection of small dishes & share everything you order. This is how best to enjoy GYO.

The pork gyoza is a must, perfect to start.

The tempura prawn sushi is stand out. You won't find better sushi in the city.

The tempura spider crab & broccoli with garlic mayo is very nice as well & perfect accompaniment with the crisp clean flavours of a premium Japanese lager.

There are so many other great dishes on offer as well that you will definitely need a second visit. Some interesting dessert options too if you still have room.

Great service & great hospitality. The location is second to none & really great value for money especially considering the premium location & quality of the food.

I really can't recommend GYO enough for a casual dinner in Townsville.

"A bit pricey
Sashimi was really good but I ordered Don and found out rice in the bowl was hard, Japanese rice should be softer and more fluffy, it wasn’t like I expected. However service (especially the young girl with glasses) and atmosphere was amazing."

"I was looking at fhe price before arriving and i was thinking why is the proce a little high. Well when i ordered from the waiter i ask are you japanese and it thrns how japanes run.

The quality of sushi was above and beyond fresh. It was a bit of a wait how ever it was well worth it. I can wait to go back and try other things.

I had the spider roll. It was soft shell crab,it could of done with more crab

I also had the tampura prawn. It looked similar to the crab but slightly different, very nice and fresh

I also had sone kind or roll with Scallop on top.

All togehter way about $42 dollars."

Those looking for a touch of Asian flavour during their time in Townsville will find a hard time beating GYO, which sits on Gregory Street just off the popular Strand waterfront precinct. In a region that's not widely known for its Japanese cuisine, GYO stands out as a restaurant worthy of the upper-end offerings found in the likes of Sydney and Melbourne rather than a more regional destination like Townsville, and it shows in all aspects from service to dish presentation to the extensive menu. The venue is modern, clean and meticulously maintained, and carries an upmarket feel throughout; upon entering you'll receive a traditional greeting in Japanese, which while it's become standard these days is still a nice touch and kicks off the authenticity nicely.
