◊ Cafe Derbl – Breakfast was also hard to come by in Hallstatt, so don’t plan on a traditional American breakfast of eggs and toast – unless you find a hotel that has breakfast included!. Our hotel did have a breakfast but it was an extra $15 per person and we thought we could find something cheaper in town. However, in hindsight we probably would have been better off just eating at our hotel because we were really dying for a big hearty breakfast.

After searching for the best places to eat in Hallstatt, my friend Medha and I settled for a traditional Hallstatt restaurant —Café Derbl—right in the heart of the main square in Hallstatt. The service was slow but good. While my friend enjoyed the fresh fish from Hallstätter See with “Hallstatt Beer,” I relished a vegetarian salad with local wine.

In the village’s cafes and restaurants, such as Cafe Derbl or Bräugasthof, you can get traditional dishes like schnitzel, local freshwater fish, and Austrian coffee and cake. In the warmer months, you’ll also have a vast selection of ice cream places. You won’t find much variety beyond this, but you don’t come to Hallstatt for the food!
