Reviews Summary
Bärenwirt is lauded for its authentic traditional Austrian cuisine, particularly its renowned fried chicken and cozy, historic atmosphere. Many praise the generous portions and the unique experience of dining in a place that has served patrons since 1663. However, some reviews mention that the food can be overrated or inconsistent, with occasional issues in service speed and ventilation.
"A nice, quiet atmosphere. Friendly staff, cold beers and amazing food! Schnitzel was incredibly tasty. The Fried Chicken was wonderful and the potato salad was superb! 10/10 would definitely eat here again"

"We stopped by for late lunch and got the spinach dumpling. It was divine!! That, paired with brown butter + cheese - 🤤 so satisfying, even for a meat lover. Aside from that, we had Apple strudel. It was perfectly balance with the cream and somehow tasted very homey. Not too sweet. And of course had beer - which is always nice and refreshing. Wanted to try their fried chicken as I saw many good reviews on it but sadly we were too full. Please do me a favour and try it ok? 😝
Service could be better as no one took our order for quite some time, even though there weren’t many customers at that time."

"I had been looking forward to this for at least two weeks, and it was exactly what I expected—the fried chicken was SO FREAKING GOOD. The outside was perfectly fried, and the tender, juicy meat was just right. They even served a sour potato salad on the side. This was the first time I’d ever finished an entire potato salad; it was really good. I managed to finish both the chicken and the salad, even though the portion was huge for me."

The 12 best things to do in Salzburg
There are a lot of fancy restaurants in Salzburg, with price tags to match, but sometimes all you want is schnitzel as big as a boot, cooked to golden perfection, and a side order of history. You’ll find precisely this at Bärenwirt, a warm, woody, hunting lodge-style tavern that has been juggling the pans since 1663. The inn forgoes all the new-fangled food trends in favor of good old-fashioned, gut-busting dishes like Bierbraten (beer roast) with lashings of dumplings and sauerkraut, beef goulash and Kasnocken (mini cheese dumplings with fried onions).
Restaurants in Salzburg
Regionally sourced, top-quality ingredients elevate the traditional Austrian dishes in this inviting wirtshaus just north of the Old City. Since 1663, locals have shared mugs of beer from the neighboring Augustinerbräu brewery in these warmly lighted, wood-paneled rooms, adorned with traditional Salzburg-style heating ovens and cushioned benches. Request a table in the cozy main-floor side room and enjoy the juicy backhendl (breaded, fried chicken), Wiener schnitzel (veal or pork), cheesy kasnocken, or beef goulash with a “bear-sized” dumpling.
An expert guide to Salzburg
A heart-warmingly trad pick for dinner, Bärenwirt is just a merry two-minute trot away. ull of timber and charm, this old-school tavern has been dishing up gut-busting Austrian classics like Backhendl (fried chicken), apparently right up there with the country’s best, Bierbraten (beer roast) and cricket ball-sized dumplings since 1663. Try the river-facing terrace if the weather permits.
Salzburger Nockerl : Magazine
Gasthaus Bärenwirt has long been dedicated to nurturing the iconic culture and cuisine of the traditional Austrian inn. Although the Bärenwirt justifiably lays claim to the best fried chicken in all of Austria, their kitchen team woos guests with many other classics, including Salzburger Nockerl, one of the big hits on their menu. They are traditionally served in the shape of three peaked mounds, which are said to represent the three local mountains here in Salzburg City (the Mönchsberg, Kapuzinerberg and, depending on who you are talking to, either the Rainberg or the Gaisberg).
7 best restaurants in Salzburg
Serving the people of Salzburg with great food and excellent service from the 17th century, Bärenwirt is one of the oldest inns in Austria. And at the heart of the restaurant is the motive to serve the visitors with the best ‘backhendl’ possible in the country and Bärenwirt does it with conviction. And the exciting part about dining at Bärenwirt is the terrace seating.

Insider tips Salzburg - Alex Krammer
Bärenwirt Restaurant on Müllner Hügel aims at serving the city’s best fried chicken – and succeeds in doing so, as far as I can see!. Here you find first-class Austrian cuisine not stingy with quantity, far away from the turmoil of tourists and thus ideal for enjoying authentic hospitality. My personal suggestion is, as already said, fried chicken.
Salzburg – a paradise for good beer
It’s a lovely place that seems to have retained much of its tradition and decor from the 17th century when it first opened its doors. The food here is great and they primarily serve the Augustiner brews from the Augustiner brewery in Munich. Augustiner is one of Munich’s top breweries – it is the star of the Munich Oktoberfest as well.
Austrian Food – WIENER SCHNITZEL and Best Beer Garden in Salzburg, Austria
Bärenwirt Restaurant – This can be a restaurant that serves unbelievable home-style Austrian meals in Salzburg. To start with I ordered frothed beer soup, which was very creamy and fairly good. I ordered my first ever wiener schnitzel in Austria, which is without doubt one of the Austrian meals nationwide dishes.
One Day in Salzburg: a Step-by-Step Guide
After 6 pm most of the businesses in old town close down and there’s not much left to do but wander around. Head outside of the old town to have dinner at one of the restaurants most beloved by locals — Bärenwirt. This place has been serving Austrian specialties since 1663, and is famous for deep-fried chicken.
Salzburg, Traunstein and Munich
What we ate: 1/2 deep-fried chicken with potato-corn salad, wiener schnitzel with parsley potatoes and cranberries. Since this was described as having "the best fried chicken in Salzburg," we had to try it. It was pretty darn good, although I'm not exactly a fried chicken connoisseur.

A Guide To Salzburg Austria: Things to Do, Where To Eat, Hotels + Essentials
Our favourite meal in Salzburg was at Barenwirt, one of the best restaurants in Salzburg. It was so delicious I definitely recommend you have lunch or dinner here if you can. Here we had a fantastic schnitzel and Kasnocken, an Austrian pasta dumpling dish with cheese and onion.

It’s a tavern restaurant with all the traditional features no guest would wish to do without. It is well-known for serving a typical, traditional spit-roasted chicken, bread dumplings, and other Austrian culinary classics in a woodsy, old-world setting.
Culinary Highlights Salzburg
The Bärenwirt tradition of great dumplings continues here, and the fried chicken couldn’t be juicier. In addition, there are rustic dishes and typical Austrian home cooking, from beef goulash to Kasnocken and Bauernschmaus.
Salzburg Restaurants to Check Out
Barenwirt is bit further away from the main tourist action, but still very much walkable. It’s nearer the part of town with the modern art museum, and has very much of a local clientele – always a good sign!
