Café Bazar on the right bank of the river Salzach, with its classic interior, has always been a second home to many artists, intellectuals and locals. Another one of the true institutions of Salzburg coffee culture, Cafe Bazar started during the 1880s, and was designed by a pair of famous architect brothers, Ceconi. Today, the cafe still stands and counts a list of luminaries as its patrons. You should definitely not miss this, as the ambience and views of the river alone will provide enough reasons to stay a couple hours!

Café Bazar is one of the two reputable cafes in Salzburg, though Bazar has more its share of locals than tourists. Here’s where you’re most likely to see intellectuals, artists, and politicians strategising or philosophising over a strudel and a coffee. The other side of the canal you’ll notice the Cathedral in which Mozart was baptised.

Café Bazar: This is a traditional Austrian café overlooking the river and the castle. They offer a full range of coffees, teas, pastries, breakfast items, sandwiches and salads. It was the perfect spot for a salad for lunch on my last day, having eaten my way through Salzburg with wonderful meals and of course my required Sacher torte.

A trip to Café Bazar, Café Tomaselli or the Sacher Café is like stepping back in time. We found elegantly dressed ladies and gentleman reading newspapers or enjoying a bite to eat. While you will find the likes of apple strudel on most menus, a visit to the Sacher Café will provide a decadent treat: their famous Sacher Torte.

Whilst Cafe Niemetz has always benefited from the musicians at the festival hall, the Bazar draws the crowds from the Landestheater Theatre and other stages nearby - actors and guests alike. You will also find journalists and writers, especially in the mornings, before the tourists arrive.

If you're after tradition and history look no further than Cafe Bazar. Likewise, it has a beautiful location on the river with, in the warmer months, a lovely terrace. Inside reminds me of a cafe from a 1930s gangster film where the main character would come for breakfast every morning.

I really believe that it is the only place where you can experience an authentic Austrian coffee house atmosphere in Salzburg. Cafe Bazar was opened in the second half of the 19th century and became a place for artists, intellectuals, and all kinds of curious people.

Das zweite repräsentative Haus in Salzburg dürfte wohl das Café Bazar sein. Ein Platz, an dem der Gast mit einem guten Kaffee und einer Zeitung seiner Wahl entschleunigen kann. Der hektische Alltag bleibt draußen, vor den Türen des Bazars.

Max Reinhardt, Romy Schneider, Marlene Dietrich, Udo Jürgens. Sie alle waren bereits Gäste im Café Bazar. Vermutlich hat einer der prominenten Gäste dort auch schon einmal einen Apfelstrudel mit Schlagobers probiert.

If Cafe Tomaselli is too crowded (either because there’s nowhere to sit or just because the environment isn’t relaxed enough for your taste), you can also consider paying a visit to Cafe Sacher or Cafe Bazar.

Since 1995 Tobias Brandstätter has been Chef de Cuisine in Gasthof Hotel Brandstätter, while his wife Evelyn took care of guests in the traditional Café Bazar in Salzburg.

And in Salzburg it is probably best to drink it in the historic Café Bazar. Celebrities such as Marlene Dietrich, Romy Schneider and Tomas Mann have been guests here.

The café is very nice and the service was extremely friendly. There was a gluten-free poppy seed and nut cake that tasted very good.
