Located on the grounds of the idyllic Burggarten and adjacent to the National Library and Hofburg Imperial Palace, the Palmenhaus is a beautiful place to catch a bite to eat between sightseeing or unwinding at one of the city’s best spa hotels. This epic glasshouse houses some impressive and exotic plants and was built in the 19th century, originally intended to be used as a summer greenhouse for the Emperor at the time. The restaurant offers a decent choice of traditional cuisine and many “Brunch-style” dishes – sandwiches, cereals and fruits, and the option of a special Austrian breakfast.

With glass walls that can soar as high as 50 feet, Palmenhaus is dramatic, but it’s also a quiet and calm place smack in the heart of Hapsburg-era Vienna. As the name suggests, the Palmenhaus is a greenhouse of the variety that nations of the 19th century were so good at creating to show off palms and other exotic plants plucked from the colonies. And thanks to a $17 million renovation in the 1990s, yes, Palmenhaus still has palm trees and tropical flora, as well as a lepidopterarium, or butterfly house.

About The Palm House: While revamping his private Castle Park in 1823, Emperor Franz Joseph I also had a huge two-winged greenhouse built on the Northeastern end of the royal garden dubbed the Palmen House. This gigantic greenhouse was built right over the foundation of a section of Vienna’s Medieval city wall that dated back to the year 1200. The Palmen House was a huge luxury for the royal family as it grew tons of tropical plants and palm trees even in the coldest Austrian days.

I’m not going to lie, you’ll be served average and slightly overpriced food at this brasserie. However, the unique setting of Brasserie Palmenhaus makes it worth recommending. Located in a giant greenhouse on the edge of the Burggarten, you’ll be seated either on a patio, overlooking the landscaped garden next to the Schmetterling Haus, or inside among the giant palms under the very impressive glass and steel structure.

Does a meal under a palm tree sound like something your parents would reply with a, ‘Oh, wow that sounds lovely.’ to?. Well, this cafe housed in a glass house impresses all who take a seat amongst its plant life. The Palmenhaus can be a coffee and cake stop, or a sit down dinner spot – it works on both levels and it will no doubt have your parents talking about it well after they’ve dried their tears and are back home.

Right near the Hofburg, you can dine in a former royal greenhouse that belonged to an Austrian emperor, under a canopy of plants and flowers. While I had an enjoyable meal at Brasserie Palmenhaus Wien, I think the menu is a taaaddd overpriced for what you get. That being said, the “Salmon Breakfast” (€15.50) I ordered had the most amazing quality salmon I’ve had in a long time and was generously piled high too!

Day drinking at Palmenhaus is the best break from sightseeing in Old Town. The cafe/brasserie was build in 1901 by architect Friedrich Ohman who was commissioned to build a butterfly and palm house in the Hofburg Palace gardens. You can either grab a drink at the famous Marble Bar, or sit outside and people watch.

Between you and I, an afternoon spent at the Palmenhaus sounds like a dream. This iconic cafe allows you to dine with plants. Palmenhau is a converted greenhouse from the empire and its neoclassical shell is filled with ALL the plants.

Walk through the Hofburg (exterior) to Kohlmarkt and explore some of the smaller squares, such as Freyung, Am Hof, Judenplatz making your way to Stephansplatz. Visit Stephansdom, take elevator up the tower. Dinner at Amgerlingbeisl.

Not only is this brasserie a great spot to try some Viennese coffee and desserts, but it’s also a whole vibe. The tall, curved glass ceilings, palm trees, and natural light make it ideal for snapping beautiful photos.
