Reviews Summary

Gasthaus Pöschl is celebrated for its authentic Viennese cuisine and cozy, lively atmosphere, making it a local favorite. Diners rave about the delicious Wiener Schnitzel, hearty goulash, and unique soups, though some note occasional longer waits and that the menu is primarily in German.

"We had such a wonderful dinner here this evening. We were walking by and saw the place full of people. We asked for a table for 2 and a friendly man helped us with a table 5 minutes later.

Lovely atmosphere in the restaurant. Everyone seemed so happy and cheerful. The portion sizes of the food was really good. Everything was cooked so nicely and was so tasty! Our favourite were the side potato dishes - wow. I wish we had more!

Recommend this place for a low key, relaxed, nice evening out :) They do accept phone bookings. Next time we will try the dessert - it sounded incredible."

"We had a group of 4 people and had to wait for about 10 minutes for the free table.

There’s little space inside so groups of 1-3 people have more chances to get a seat.

The food is of great quality and the portions are giant. Everything was tasty. However we had to wait for about 30-40 minutes. Even though the people who came 10-15 minutes after us got food earlier than us.

Overall I can recommend this place."

Raman Gritsak

"A cozy restaurant for some traditional Austrian dishes. Really appreciate its vibrant atmosphere.
We were lucky that we didn't have to wait even though we had no reservation. You can see it's a popular restaurant, as it's crowded during dinner time.
Schnitzel and chicken livers are very tasty and served in good portion."

It’s a challenge to find true-to-Vienna traditional restaurants in the tourist-saturated city center (District 1), which makes the existence of Gasthaus Pöschl all the more precious. Yes, some tourists also stumble in here, but you’ll notice the lively banter between the kind waitstaff and the longtime regulars (“Christian Gihl, from 6 p.m.” warns a small brass plate bolted onto the bar counter). The inside is small, cozy, and cramped, the food more elevated than the informal decor would indicate.

Where To Upgrade Beyond Schnitzel

Like in the good old days Austrian actor Hanno Pöschl (who also owns the Kleines Café opposite) prefers to have his menu. For example, the traditional Viennese breaded chicken (Backhendl) is still marinated here over night which gives it a distinct flavour. The Viennese Reisfleisch (rice stew with beef) comes like my grandma used to prepare it, just better: with hearty smoked paprika and grated cheese on top.

Hiding in plain sight, we find Gasthaus Pöschl in the middle of the first district, a stones throw from Stephansplatz. Stepping inside, immediately noticeable is the large bar in the middle of the popular Gasthaus that dominates Pöschl. Regulars and tourists crowd around, sipping their Czech beer, dining on their dishes piled with hearty Austrian cuisine.

Pöschl may be small, and its decoration may be basic, but the tavern’s heart and soul are poured into their Wiener Schnitzel, which is accompanied by potato salad. Local cheeses and heart-warming soups round out the menu for anyone who fancies something different. Centrally located, in Weihburggasse, it’s no surprise that it fills up fast.

Just around the corner from St. Stephan's Cathedral, the former "Gasthaus Immervoll" offers not only classic Austrian cuisine, but also good dishes with that little bit extra something. Must eat: chanterelle mushrooms. If they are on the menu, then you have to order them here.
