What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Zum Schwarzen Kameel is a historic Viennese institution praised for its authentic cuisine, particularly its schnitzel and open-faced sandwiches. Diners appreciate the vibrant atmosphere and elegant setting, though some find the prices high for the quality, with occasional mentions of inconsistent service and stale bread. It's a place cherished for its history and ambiance, but value for money can be debated.
"Historic cafe that’s relevant and centre of attention to this day. Oysters, schnitzel were divine, as was the vibe and buzz in the middle of Vienna with next to stage seats to the city’s heart. Abigail who served us was also exceptional."

"Nice pastry and sandwiches..everything was delicious..but...... I hate being served a chipped cup for my tea. When I want to ask for the waiter to change my cup, he was no longer around and kept moving to other part of the cafe. It's not nice to have to be super anxious about where you put your lips every time you want to drink your tea. I thought, that it should be a standard, at least, for a high-end cafe like this to NOT serve their customer with chipped cup however small it is."

"Went here for dinner and had a great experience. There was a line in front when we arrived, but it moved quickly and we were seated without much delay. Everything was run very professionally and efficiently. The place was completely full on a Thursday night, which is a good sign. We asked for a table inside, and the atmosphere was calm and refined—no music, just the quiet hum of conversation, which made for a very pleasant setting.
Our waitress was extremely attentive and quick. She brought our drinks and food right away and even gave honest recommendations on what to order, which felt genuinely in our interest. We had the Wiener Schnitzel, which was excellent—perfectly cooked and served with a delicious potato salad. We also tried the Tafelspitz, which was good, though the Schnitzel stood out as the highlight.
The service throughout was fast, professional, and friendly. With white tablecloths and a classic feel, the place maintains a traditional elegance without being stuffy. It’s a bit on the pricier side, but for the location in the center of Vienna and the level of service and food, it’s absolutely worth it. I would definitely recommend it."

Zum Schwarzen Kameel’s unusual moniker, which means At the Black Camel, grabs your attention. It’s a play on the name of founder Johan Baptist Cameel, who opened the establishment back in 1618. Appointed a spice purveyor to the Hapsburg court in 1825, Zum Schwarzen Kameel is today a restaurant, with a separate delicatessen that makes good sandwiches and a gourmet shop selling fine cheeses and wines.

In 1618, Johan Baptist Cameel acquired the building to sell varieties of spice and gave it its current name, translated means ‘to the black camel’.
