The Graanmarkt 13 restaurant is part of a new concept combining food, fashion and art. Its creators, Tim and Ilse, live at Graanmarkt 13 with their family and ensure that Belgium’s new talent is represented in the gallery, that the store is replenished with stylish garments and that guests are served with top-quality food. Chef Seppe Nobels is an expert in transforming fresh ingredients into beautifully presented dishes, using vegetables and herbs from Graanmarkt’s rooftop garden and ‘stress-free’ fish which have had time to relax after their journey from the sea making them taste better.

Vilhjalmur Sigurdarson at Souvenir in Ghent and Seppe Nobels at Graanmarkt 13 in Antwerp were also among the winners, as were Arabelle Meirlaen and her eponymous restaurant in Marchin, Kris de Roy of Hofke van Bazel in Bazel, Stefan Jacobs at Hors-Champs in Gembloux and Sang-Hoon Degeimbre at L'Air du Temps in Liernu. All of them are realising their sustainable vision, in particular by using produce from their own vegetable gardens. Also notable, are the sustainable locavore cuisine of Ludovic Vanackere at Atelier de Bossimé in Loyers and Filip Claeys at De Jonkman in Sainte-Croix.

The original trailblazer Graanmarkt 13 has been a key part of the Antwerp shopping scene since it opened in a white, five-storey townhouse designed by architect Vincent Van Duysen nearly a decade ago. The ground-floor space is mostly dedicated to fashion, with sweaters by Nordic brand People’s Republic of Cashmere and floaty dresses by Belgian Sofie D’Hoore, but there are also collectibles in the form of trays by the late Belgian ceramicist Pierre Culot and Muller Van Severen cutlery made in collaboration with local design company Valerie Objects. Head upstairs for shoes and beauty products, and downstairs for the restaurant run by urban farming pioneer Seppe Nobels.

It is a great place to relax on one of the small terraces with a drink or to dine at the famous restaurant listed in the Michelin Guide; ‘Graanmarkt 13’. Around the corner you will find the ‘Theaterplein’ and the ‘Oudevaartplaats’ where you can visit the weekly ‘Vogeltjes- en Vreemdelingenmarkt’ (Exotic market) on Saturday and Sunday.

In 2015, the Graanmarkt 13 restaurant was awarded the Gault & Millau Award for the best vegetable restaurant in Flanders. It is no coincidence!
