Frit Flagey

Frit Flagey is more than a Fritkot, it is a Brussels institution. The crown of best Fritkot in Brussels is hotly debated and highly coveted, but Frit Flagey is widely agreed to be among the best. Notorious for its long queues and rather unfriendly service, this is nonetheless part of the experience and will not detract from the satisfaction that comes from eating the perfect frite.

Their golden, melt-on-your-tongue potato sticks mean that Frit Flagey is often named (along with several others) the best place to find fries in the city. Unequivocal evidence of their popularity comes from a 2011 Facebook campaign which saved Frit Flagey from shutting down. Its success meant that the owner moved the business to another place and its loyal customers duly followed.

Whilst Frit Flagey lies a little bit out of town (about a 35-minute walk from the centre), there are few places in Brussels more known than this unassuming green frites stand. The trip is more than worth it, and the Ixelles area is lovely to explore whilst you enjoy your fries, especially if you have a wander around Ixelles Ponds. You can expect long queues at Frit Flagey, but that’s what you get when you’re trying some of the best Belgian fries in Brussels, at one of the most popular spots!

Officially added to the Unesco list of cultural treasures in 2017, everyone has their favourite, with Frit Flagey, Maison Antoine in Place Jourdan and Friterie Place Saint-Josse regularly garnering accolades. Another award-winner is new chip on the block, The Brussels Frites Atelier (pictured, above) in Rue Sainte-Catherine, owned by Dutch TV chef Sergio Herman. Alternatively, enjoy a sit-down experience at Le Tram de Boitsfort, a takeaway and tiny restaurant with four tables on board.

This is just a “ frietkot” (which is a fries stand), no chairs, no tables. Sitting on a corner of the “Place Flagey”, you will regularly observe a long queue in front of this fries counter but the client is rapidly served so no worries. If you don’t wish to eat standing, you can always walk to the Ponds of Ixelles to eat with a view or you can go to the bar “Le Pantin” where they allow you to have a beer with your fries cone.

The most famous ones in the city are Frit Flagey and Maison Antoine, which rival each other for the top spot in Brussels. Fritland is another trendy one, and its location in the center of the city means that there is always a queue for its delicious fries. "Frituurs" in Belgium also have loads of different sauces for you to try, so do not hesitate to vary it up a bit and try a new one each time.

Frit’ Flagey is just an old stand on the side of the road, but you can’t ever judge the quality of frites based off of that. If the lines are long, you know it’s good, which is exactly what’s going on here. Famously known to be the best frites in Brussels (and I’ll attest to that), the portion sizes are also huge, meaning you’ll walk away feeling happy and full.

For the uninitiated, an order from Frit Flagey will blow your hitherto understanding of fries. This popular establishment was under threat of extinction, but saved by public petition. After a shuffle in location, the proud tradition of serving frites to the people of Brussels continues.

You can’t say you’ve had a true Brussels experience without frites. Frit Flageyis a legendary street food spot serving crispy fries with a huge selection of sauces. It’s a classic among the Brussels cheap eats selection, and perfect for a quick snack while exploring the neighborhood.

The Belgians treat their French fries as importantly as a religion, or indeed their beer, which they are also famous for. This place nearly always has a queue. As soon as you taste the fries it isn’t hard to see why it’s one of the best places for French fries in the country.

Frit Flagey: If you’re looking for a casual lunch and are keen on having something truly Belgian (fun fact: Fries are Belgian, not French!) have a cone of crispy frites at one of the most popular fritkots in Brussels.

In my research Maison Antoine and Frit Flagey were highly recommended. The latter was out of my way and the former is closed on Sundays. Instead, I decided to try Fritland which is in the heart of city centre.

Located on the iconic Place Flagey, this tiny place always has a looong queue of eclectic people waiting to get their frites fix, whether it’s at 11:30 a.m.
