Reviews Summary

Astro Boy is lauded for its trendy atmosphere, creative Japanese fusion dishes, and excellent cocktails. Diners rave about the shareable plates, with particular highlights being the corn with kimchi butter, vegetarian katsu, and fried chicken. While the food and service are consistently praised, some reviewers note that the vegetarian portions can be small for the price.

"Astro Boy, an izakaya in Gent, wasn’t exactly on my must hit list when visiting but Belgium. But it SHOULD be for anyone visiting Gent. This spot is fire. From the delicious cocktails (or mocktail) to amazing vibes they provide. Must tries would be the beef tataki, corn with kimchi butter (WHOEVER THOUGHT OF THIS DISH DESERVES A RAISE) and the vegetarian katsu, which was recommended to us and so glad she did!!! SOOO GOOD. And the playlist in the background was sick. They were playing hip hop tracks that varied from OutKast to 50 cent, just added such a good atmosphere, especially me visiting from LA. Service was exception and we felt very well taken care of as we only speak English.

As I said, this spot is such a wonderful surprise when in Belgium. Definitely get your fill of waffles, frites and beer but I can’t recommend Astro Boy more if you’re looking for something different or chill. Especially if you’re a fan of Japanese cuisine."

"If you are in the mood for something different and special, you should definitely try Astro boy. We took 3 dishes per person to share. The vegan dumplings were delicious, the okonomiyaki authentic , the fried chicken perfectly cooked and the pork with kimchee a total surprise! We took also a cocktail with basil taste. It was so good that my husband took another one in the end. They have a lot of vegan options, salty and sweet (in the picture you can see Pavlova)."

"Delicious Asian-inspired shared dining in a relaxed setting. We had the cucumber salad, tender beef tataki, roasted cabbage, mushroom gyozas, and broccolini—each dish packed with flavor and beautifully balanced. The homemade ginger ale was a highlight: super refreshing and not sweet. The staff were incredibly friendly and made us feel very welcome.

The only reason we give 4 out of 5 stars is that the vegetarian portions were quite small for the price. Still, a great spot worth visiting."

Ghent: seven good reasons to visit this great Belgian city

On our first evening, we opted for quirky Astro Boy which serves Japanese food and it was really good. You can’t book but we walked a few minutes to Minor Swing for a drink while we waited for a table and got a text when it was ready. Later we had cocktails at Jiggers on Oudburg, a street with lots of eateries.
