Ask about spice levels

If sensitive to spice, inquire about dish heat levels before ordering.

Pair with yogurt

Locals often enjoy a side glass of yogurt (like ayran) with their meal.

🥙 Ćevapi kod Želje – klasik koji se ne preskače kad se nalazis u Sarajevu 10 komada ćevapa, s kajmakom i lukom – jednostavno, ali savršeno. Kajmak domaći, bogat i maziv, luk oštar i svjež, somun mekan i taman natopljen sokovima. Ćevapi sočni, puni ukusa, pečeni na pravom roštilju – svaki zalogaj udara direktno u nostalgiju. Ovo je mjesto gdje se osjeti pravi užitak sarajevskih ćevapa – u punom smi...

Reviews Summary

Ćevabdžinica Željo is highly praised for its authentic and delicious ćevapi, often described as the best in Sarajevo. Diners appreciate the fast service, generous portions, and reasonable prices, making it a must-visit for a quick and satisfying Bosnian meal. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few mention that the service, though fast, can sometimes lack warmth.

"I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and deep appreciation for the warm hospitality and outstanding service I received during my visit to your wonderful restaurant.

A special thanks goes to Ne’metullah and Mohamed for their kindness, warm welcome, and exceptional professionalism, which truly reflect the spirit of genuine Bosnian hospitality.

I would also like to praise the quality of the food served—it was absolutely delicious and full of authentic flavor. It was truly one of the best meals I’ve ever had.

Thank you all once again. I wish you continued success and excellence, and may Ćevabdžinica Željo remain a special destination for every visitor to Sarajevo.

“I look forward to returning soon

"Cevapi was top class and staff were very polite. Service was quick and so getting a table was easy as food came fast. I got a Coke Zero, rice pieces of Cevapi in bread and some kujmak (cheese). It was all 11.50 BAM, as of MAR2025.

I would say that it actually rivals the Ferhatovic Cevapi place on the other side of old town. Minor differences in spices but just as good. Some may even say it is better! Recommended for a quick bite!"

Nabil R

"We looked for this restaurant because it was highly recommended as one of the oldest and most authentic in Sarajevo. We didn’t order ćevapi since we had already tried plenty at other places, but the food we did order was delicious and came out very quickly. The restaurant filled up fast, but we never felt rushed to finish or leave, which we really appreciated. The service wasn’t outstanding, but it was totally fine"

Sarajevo’s street food is as good as street food gets, and Cevabdzinica Zeljo is a first stop for any native returning to town or for tourists who want to get a real taste of the Bosnian food scene. Order cevapcici (che-VAHP-chee-chee), a type of non-spicy beef sausage, with pita, onions, and creamy kajmak cheese. In Bosnian culture it’s customary to get a side glass of yogurt to drink, so do as the locals do and chug away.

48 Hours in Sarajevo, the City Where East Meets West

The owners of this place have 3 separate locations around the Old Town area, named after the local football team. But, regardless of whether they support FK Sarajevo or FK Željo, one thing that locals tend to agree on is that this is the go-to place for authentic Sarajevski ćevapi. National Geographic even recommended it, which is yet another testament to the quality of food served here.

Enjoy Bosnian food in Sarajevo

Sarajevo is a paradise for meat lovers and it's full of small cafes and restaurants offering cevapi, a traditional skinless sausage served with delicious pitta bread. Places serving it are known as Cevabdžinica and each has its own name. The dishes at Željo, in the middle of the old town are wonderful, and there always seems to be a queue here - never a bad sign!

We had our Cevapi at Cevabdzinica Zeljo 1 while exploring Sarajevo’s old town, and the restaurant only serves this one dish so it was easy to order. During peak dining hours it usually gets crowded, but we visited outside of those times and didn’t have to wait for a seat. The waiter was pretty helpful with our order, and we absolutely enjoyed the meal.

The best Ćevapi in Sarajevo: find them here!

Named after one of the city's two football clubs, this Ćevabdžinica is one of the most popular in the city. There are now three restaurants in total, all within a few metres of each other and all always full. The Ćevapi are juicy, well done and the somun is the star here: juicy, greasy, crispy.
