Reviews Summary

Mekitsa & Coffee is celebrated for its delicious, freshly fried mekitsa with a wide range of sweet and savory toppings. Diners appreciate the traditional experience and the quality of the coffee. However, some reviews mention the small space, particularly upstairs seating, and one reviewer noted a negative initial service experience.

"Very good! The staff was busy but took the time to speak to me in English to take my order. The place is a bit small so you may not be able to sit. I’d like to go back and try other flavours of mekitsa (I had feta and raspberry jam)!"

Anne LS

"my mate and I tried 4 mekitsas - cheese and ham, cheese and salami, cheese and fig jam and nutella and banana - and we were not let down by any of them. 24 lev for these 4 is a relatively cheap lunch/brunch spot. the people making them were super fast as well we only waited like 2 minutes to have them fried and put together. the atmosphere is also really cute upstairs and you can watch the street while you enjoy your mekitsas. left feeling very very full. big 🪭"

Antonia Palermo

"Delicious Mekitsa (we tried the one with white and yellow cheese, and the spicy mix one).
There’s seating available upstairs, but the place isn’t very clean."

Mekitsa is a deep-fried pastry similar to a doughnut that reminds every Bulgarian of their childhood, when it was one of the breakfast delicacies their grannies prepared for them. You can find it in some bakeries, although it has been slowly disappearing…except for Mekitsa & Kafe(Mekitsa & Coffee), a special place dedicated to mekitsa in Sofia. You will have it fried in front of your eyes, and you can have various add-ons, such as cheese, honey, peanut butter, etc.

Back in the times when I was a kid, my grandmother used to make mekitsa every weekend. Same as all other grandmothers in the village and the country. Our grandmothers used to prepare dough themselves at home with eggs, yoghurt, flour and other unknown for me ingredients, which was then made into small balls and deep fried – and that’s what Mekitsa is.
