Reviews Summary

Backyard Cafe is lauded for its extensive healthy and vegan menu, fresh ingredients, and tranquil, plant-filled atmosphere, making it a favorite for mindful eaters and those seeking a peaceful spot. While generally praised for quality and taste, some diners note it can be on the pricier side and suggest clarifying menu changes with staff.

"Although a lot has been said about this lovely cafe, there's always room for more appreciation. Located centrally, this bright, airy cafe boasts of cozy interiors and some great vegetarian/ vegan options.

It's a really pity that we weren't hungry enough to sample more of the menu. We ordered coffee and a vegan key lime pie. The pie was absolutely delicious and the coffee hot and strong. Best of all, for those seeking hot breakfast or brunch, there are so many wonderful options that you will be spoilt for choice. The staff serve with a smile and the place makes you want to linger a bit longer. This was a great find and highly recommended to those visiting or living in Phnom Penh."

"Found this delightful cafe on our first day in Phnom Penh. And had breakfast here for the next 10 days. A beautiful, plant filled, AC cafe that serves wonderful, healthy food. Our server was attentive and pleasent everyday.

We had a variety of items from their breakfast menu but the best bang for your buck was from their combos (there are 5) which included a main, a fresh pressed juice and any coffee or tea you wanted. We opted for a latte and flat white. Wonderful barista! Bread was a whole grain sourdough. Everything was so fresh.

Lots of business people meet here or are on zoom calls. Backpackers, locals, young and not so young.

Highly highly recommend!!"

"such a cute cafe! came here for breakfast & already planning to come back another day. it’s a little bit on the pricier side, but a great spot for vegans/vegetarians. they have lots of different options! delicious food. the naughty but nice smoothie was one of the best smoothies i’ve ever tasted."

Operating as the sister café to Vibe, Backyard Cafe carries the same philosophy and is another hit with healthy eaters, proving the days of boring vegetarian food are a thing of the past. An example is the Earth Bowl, which features lentils, roasted cauliflower, brown rice, roasted red peppers, pickled beetroot, guacamole, spinach, activated almonds and salad – all washed down with a botanical healing tea, made from calendula flower, rose petals, and lavender.

The Best Places to Eat in Phnom Penh

If you're a vegan visiting Cambodia, worry not as Phnom Penh has several restaurants serving plant-based cuisine. For our money, the best of the bunch is Backyard, which has two branches - once close to the Royal Palace, and the other in the hip Russian Market district. Regardless of which location you choose, Backyard is ideal for cold-pressed juices, which are made with the country's only hydraulic press, while others swear by their smoothie bowls, jackfruit burgers (an acquired taste), tasty tempeh veggie wraps, and quinoa salads.

If you prefer your coffee concoctions with a more Western vibe, be it European or Australian, there are plenty of appealing venues to grab a stimulating brew, among them Backyard Cafe, Vibe, The Barista, Lot 369, Bloom, and Java Creative Cafe. These largely Western-owned operations tend unsurprisingly to congregate in expat-favored locations like BKK1, Toul Tum Poung, and the Royal Palace area; some have multiple branches and all are well worth checking out.

How to Spend Three Incredible Days in Phnom Penh

I mentioned how Phnom Penh has transformed in recent decades, so prepare to start feeling something akin to culture shock. After reading about so many horrifying events, it can feel jarring to leave the confines of the Genocide Museum and enter the bright vibes of a fun, modern city. One of my favourite spots around Toul Tom Poung is Backyard Cafe, a health-focused eatery that wouldn’t be out of place among the brunchy restaurants of Australia.

Backyard Cafe now has three locations serving live, raw, vegan, gluten-free, and healthy foods (not necessarily all at once, though). Even if this is not usually the sort of fare you find appealing, you’ll be surprised at how delicious and filling the cafe’s food is, despite the healthiness factor. The menu is filled with salads, quinoa, sandwiches, and lasagna made without pasta (it’s surprisingly good).
