As one of Siem Reap’s longest-running cookery classes, led by the well-established Le Tigre de Papier in the centre of town, this class takes in a trip to Phsar Chas market in the centre of town, followed by a two-and-a-half hour lesson in how to rustle up a starter, main and dessert. More interestingly, though, this restaurant offers cooking classes, which will take you on a visit of the market to purchase your ingredients before learning to prepare a three-course Khmer meal starting from $15 per person.

Le Tigre de Papier, Pub Street: Located on the famous Pub Street, Le Tigre de Papier is well known for it’s cooking school as well as its restaurant and boutique hotel. It serves a selection of Cambodian and European dishes although advertises itself based on its selection of pizzas and wood fired pizza oven. The ‘Kebab’ pizza featuring chicken and garlic sauces as a particular favourite!.

Tigre de Papier may sound like an entirely French affair, but their chicken shawarma is delicious–the perfect hangover-buster. Along the river, Rosy Guesthouse offers a full menu of Western dishes, including a plump, juicy burger with caramelized onions and cheese. Served with homemade pickles, coleslaw and chips, budget some extra time to finish the heaping plate.

Located in the center of Siem Reap on Street 8, commonly called Pub Street, you will find Paper Tiger, a staple here since 1999. With so many bars, clubs, and restaurants surrounding it, it can be overwhelming to pick a place. But the relaxed atmosphere, friendly servers, cheap beer, and great food at an affordable price make Paper Tiger an easy pick.

Other Pub Street well-known monuments such as Temple Club and Le Tigre de Papier came into fruition not too long afterwards. However, as described by a long-time Siem Reap living expat, there were more rats occupying Pub Street than tourists at that time. Around 2005, Pub Street was finally paved and turned into a cleaner road.

There are a few different class options, including some that bring you to a local market to buy produce before cooking. If you want to become a master of Cambodian cuisine, the most effective way is to go to a Siem Reap cooking class called Tiger Paper (Le Tigre de Papier). There are many short classes with complex skills, such as vegetarian cooking. One of the interesting activities you should participate in is Bai Sach Chrouk.

Then don your apron and chef’s hat and prepare two dishes of your choice at Le Tigre de Papier. The fish amok, Camboia’s national dish, is a must try, as are the green mango salad and fresh spring rolls – plus a sticky rice dessert. You can buy a cookbook whose proceeds support a local NGO.

A class at Le Tigre de Papier Cooking School is one of the best value mornings or afternoons you can enjoy. Starting with a visit to the local market to stock up on produce, we returned to cook a three-course meal before sitting down to enjoy the fruits of our labour for only US$14!

One of the best all-rounders in Siem Reap, the popular Tigre serves up authentic Khmer food, great Italian dishes and a selection of favourites from most other corners of the globe. It conveniently offers frontage on both Pub St and the Alley; the latter is generally a lot quieter.

Countryside Cooking Class on the outskirts and Lily’s Secret Garden Cooking Class near Siem Reap center teach tourists to cook with local flavors, while Le Tigre de Papier is in the center of the town and Champey Cooking Class offers market tours along with cooking and tasting.

The alleys and the nearby streets of the Pub Street area are also the ideal havens with cocktail bars, expat and tourist pubs, live music nightspots, live jazz shows, etc. When it comes to Street 9, expect to get attracted by the exciting atmosphere in Laundry Bar.

Opened in 1999, this was one of the original restaurants on Pub Street. Western and Khmer dishes are featured, and a BBQ is cooked on your table top. Well-known for their wood-fired oven pizza, they have 24-hour delivery.

Other well-known landmarks like Temple Club and Le Tigre de Papier came to fruition. However as mentioned by a long-time living expatriate of Siem Reap, Pub Street was occupied by more rats than at that time by tourists.

Le Tigre de Papier – Another one of the “founding members” of Pub Street. Le Tigre de Papier has been open since the beginning. It has two seating areas, one directly on Pub Street and one at the back in the lane.
