Drop your bags and flag a tuk-tuk with a destination of Sister Srey. This restaurant is one of Siem Reap’s “social enterprises,” pairing dining with philanthropy. There’s no single-use plastic in sight (even the straws are reusable bamboo), waste is composted or recycled, employees receive advanced language lessons and hospitality training, and 20 percent of the profits go to local charities.

Yet another of our favourite cafés in Siem Reap, and a regular haunt of ours, Sister Srey Café is a social enterprise that donates a portion of its profits to the Hearts to Harmony Foundation, as well as running a number of other initiatives to help the café’s staff and others in Cambodia to build a better life for themselves. The riverside café, set up by two sisters (‘srey’ means ‘sister’ or ‘woman’ in Khmer), is popular for its strong coffee, good-value and health-conscious, predominantly western meals that include a range of raw food dishes, and above all else for the friendly services and positive vibes that the place has quickly become known for. Upstairs from the café, there’s also a boutique and reading area, the perfect spot to settle in for a couple of hours on a rainy day, or simply for a break after exploring Angkor Wat.

Sister Srey is one of the yummiest cafes in Siem Reap, started by two Aussie sisters who stopped in here years ago on their way to the UK and only recently left. Beautifully decorated with menus inside old Little Golden Books, Sister Srey pours a fabulous cup of coffee and has a delicious breakfast and lunch menu including my favourite, the bowl of goodness with brown rice, veggies and tahini. Most importantly the cafe is a social enterprise, training young Khmer and supporting them to find the balance between education and working to support their families.

Sister Srey is located literally in the heart of the city (right next to the old market) where you would be able to watch people going about their everyday lives by just to sitting there, watching them go by. This café was opened by two sisters to not only to serve coffee, but also to support Khmer students by training them in hospitality, English language skills and personal development. They also have various incentives in place, to name a few, working alongside the Hearts to Harmony Foundation which supports the rural families.

Opened in 2012, the airy and Instagram-worthy café is also a social enterprise with a goal to provide employment opportunities to young Khmer students who are struggling to balance studying and having to support their families. Besides being active in multiple community activities such as lunch donations and supporting small local businesses and farmers, Sister Srey also focuses heavily on environmental sustainability and works hard to reuse, reduce and recycle wherever possible.

Located on the Siem Reap River, across from the Old Market and the Old Market Bridge in Downtown Siem Reap, Sister Srey Cafe is almost always busy. They serve breakfast and lunch, along with a selection of pastries, coffee and teas, smoothies, and juice. The coffee here was excellent, a little more expensive than the other cafes, but the cafe is also heavily invested in the Cambodian community, giving to APOPO and the local partner, the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC).

Overlooking Siem Reap River, Sister Srey has cemented itself as a firm favourite on the breakfast – and lunch and coffee – scene since opening its doors in 2012. We stumbled across Sister Srey by accident when we were desperate to get out of the afternoon heat. Most of the ingredients used at Sister Srey are organic and chemical-free and sourced from local suppliers such as Bosco Bakery School. The cafe serves all your brunch favourites such as avocado toast, corn fritters, french toast and smoothie bowls alongside juices, tea and coffee. If you head there later in the afternoon, we can highly recommend a good old pot of ‘Earl Grey’ tea (we are British after all) and a slice of their coconut, banana bread. The bread was delicious.

On our first day visiting Angkor Wat, we ended up tired and hungry, so when we went back to the city we were looking for something to eat nearby the Siem Reap river. We found Sister Srey Café as a welcoming cafe with some empty tables and it seemed worth to try. While reading the menu we started getting excited and getting hungrier.

I showed up at Sister Srey Cafe, which has a large sign reminding us all that “life’s too short for bad coffee” very close to 6:00 pm and the coffee machine was already being cleaned…but I came back…and am glad I did.
