The comforting rattle of cocktail shakers commends a skillfully curated drinks list: kick off with a chilli-laced Margarita La Vida Coco, then lean back as your choice of Izakaya-influenced “global” dishes arrives – from gyozas, tuna tataki and calamari, to the Asian lettuce wraps festooned with spicy sauces, most are great for sharing.

Block Kitchen & Bar is a relative newcomer to the Banff restaurant scene, but this tiny cocktail bar is quickly proving itself to be a major contender. The tapas-style menu features “Izakaya” (Japanese bar food) influences, along with elements from other Asian countries, and showcases primarily local ingredients. My personal favourite things to order are the Duck Spring Rolls, the Pork & Kimchi Gyozas, and the Ahi Tuna Tataki, but there are many other great choices too—and since they’re small plates, you can sample more of them!

Shortly after arriving in Banff town on our first day, we needed to find a place to eat for lunch so we stopped by Block Kitchen and Bar. This cute little restaurant on Caribou Street features a global menu that is heavy on Asian influence but also pulls in flavors and techniques from South American and European cultures. I enjoyed my Chilled Ramen Noodle Salad ($15), which came in a nice light Tsuyu seasame broth with slices of Tandoori chicken.

This cozy space is a local dinner favourite for good reason. Known for great quality and variety, the Block is also experienced with accommodating a variety of dietary requirements. The Chef’s Curry Craving (signature dish which rotates every few days), asian lettuce wraps, and the zen salad with quinoa, golden beets and sesame-ginger dressing are excellent choices which are easily modified to suit gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan diners.

Small and hip, the Block tends to be quite busy, but if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere and a good selection of tapas plates, this is the ticket. Load your table with items like duck spring rolls, pig and fig creations, and seared saikyo miso scallops and wash it all down with a prickly pear cocktail or a signature house Caesar. There’s also a late-night menu to help soak up those drinks if you make a night of it.

Its intimate space gives locals and tourists a place to go for small talk over food and drinks—while it can get a little tight inside, its food is worth it!. Expect delicious Asian cuisine with its famous pork belly lettuce wraps (or opt for the vegan-friendly smoked chili tofu) and steamed bao buns.
