Reviews Summary

Native Tongues Taqueria is celebrated for its outstanding and authentic Mexican flavors, with many diners feeling a sense of 'coming home.' The vibrant atmosphere and friendly, fast service contribute to a positive dining experience. While most reviews are glowing, some patrons note that prices can be higher relative to portion sizes, and the restaurant can get quite noisy when busy.

"Returned to Native Tongues Taqueria for dinner after a long time — and it was like coming home to a familiar favorite.
Nothing has changed, and that’s exactly what makes this place so special. The food remains outstanding: vibrant, fresh, and packed with authentic Mexican flavor. Every dish we tried was crafted with care and tasted just as amazing as we remembered.

Service was impressively fast, and the servers were warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming — a true reflection of the hospitality NTT is known for. The prices are more than fair, especially considering the exceptional quality of the ingredients and overall experience.

A big thank you to the entire team at Native Tongues for another memorable meal. It’s places like this that remind you why you keep coming back."

Amit Malhotra

"This restaurant was an unexpected delight. It offers the closest experience to Mexico City's Mexican food style that you can find in Edmonton and many other Canadian cities. As someone from Mexico City, I was amazed at how authentic the flavours were. The food is definitely the highlight, but the drinks are also worth trying, and the service is fast and friendly. Just be aware that the restaurant can get quite noisy when it's busy. Aside from that, if you love Mexican food, this is a place you simply cannot miss."

Iván Moreno

"Very solid taco restaurant with generous late night happy hour and mezcal selection.

The tacos are good with decent flavour and variety. The drinks are pretty good too, which is an added bonus.

It’s a solid late night choice if you are in the area, and a favourite for the younger crowd because of their prices and late night happy hour."

This Victoria Park staple is loved for its Mexican street eats and market-style foods served up in a fun and informal setting. Having received numerous awards since opening its doors in 2015, Native Tongues Taqueria is in equal parts versatile and classic, featuring homestyle staples and elevated Mexican–American dishes such as its famous burger, the hamburguesa al carbon, served with chips and hot sauce. Wash down with a smoky mezcalgarita or an inventive cold-brew cocktail from its Mezcal-centered drinks menu.

What it is: This fun-loving Mexican taqueria serves a traditional Mexican food with a (spicy) twist. Why go: To try the charcoal grilled tacos served "mercado style," which are perfect to share with the family or a group of friends. The stacked bar is centered around mezcal spirits, so expect potently delicious cocktails to wash down the awesome food.

Mexican Restaurants in Calgary

Highly praised for its authentic Mexican cuisine, including a wide variety of delicious tacos, quesadillas, and traditional dishes, Native Tongues has become one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in Calgary. With two locations, including one in Victoria Park, this restaurant is easily accessible by both locals and tourists. We’ve been here a couple of times and have tried a variety of dishes, including the Super Torta (a Mexican-style sandwich with gouda cheese, refried beans, guacamole, cilantro, onions, salsa taqueria and a choice of protein), the Ceviche De Aguachile (prawns, green or dark salsa, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onions, cilantro, and avocado salsa), Birria tacos (braised beef, adobo, red onion, and cilantro), and Barbacoa de Cordero (slow roasted lamb neck, salsa roja, coal roasted onions, avocado, Chile, chickpeas, white onion, and cilantro).

6 Best Traditional Tacos in Calgary

The decor says hip and modern taqueria, but Native Tongues is dedicated to sacred Mexican culinary traditions. That dedication has inspired the restaurant to do tacos two different ways: tacos de guisado (plates of your choice of filling heaped on individual corn tortillas) and tacos al carbon (family-style, build-your-own taco platters of charcoal-grilled meat). They’re both worth trying, but for a break from the meat, the frijoles taco with refried beans, crema, queso fresco and cilantro is a tasty vegetarian treat.

Best Mexican Restaurants in Calgary

One of Calgary’s most esteemed Mexican restaurants, Native Tongues is part authentic taqueria and part chic foodie hangout. Don’t expect any gloppy cheese burritos or Tex-Mex here — the kitchen is more about sumptuous tacos filled with pork belly or beef stripling cooked over live fire, slow-roasted lamb neck, or locally cultivated mushrooms. The carefully crafted cocktails are also a huge draw, specifically Native Tongues’ signature Mezcalgarita, a smoky take on a classic marg.

Oh my gosh – possibly the best tacos I’ve ever had in my entire life!. It took all my restraint to not order a margarita but since I didn’t have room in my schedule for a siesta (it was lunch, after all), I went for the Agua Fresca instead (try the hibiscus one). Start your meal off with the Salsa Sampler – watch it, some of them are SPICY but they are all so flavourful – the homemade chips were top notch and such a generous portion.
