What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Shokunin garners significant praise for its high-quality, flavorful Japanese cuisine and the creative artistry of Chef Darren MacLean, with many highlighting the exquisite sushi, sashimi, and yakitori. The ambiance is often described as stylish and cozy, with attentive service that enhances the dining experience. However, some diners find the portions small for the price, and the intimate setting can lead to feeling crowded.
"We did the chef's plating, which only has a couple settings a night. Unfortunately the group head of us was very late which meant our rezo for 730 didn't start until 830. But we didn't mind as the atmosphere was great, the staff more than made up for it with free add-ons (above and beyond!!!) And the meal was incredible. This may have been my favourite dining experience of all time. The staff and chef were so friendly and welcoming, and we shut the place down and didn't feel any kind of rush to get out :p If you have the opportunity to try Shokinin out, you absolutely should!"

"I’m actually disappointed. The restaurant was on my list for quite sometime before I had a chance to come in today. I was more excited to try Shokunin because it made the Top 100 Restaurants in Canada.
The food portion was super small, and the skewers quality wasn’t the best. To be honest, I can make skewers like that at home. In addition, the wing flaps were unbelievably salty, we needed to chug our drinks right after that.
Cocktails were ok, not “Oooo I need to come back here for this” kinda feeling. With the prices I did expect something more than that.
The place is tiny but has an ok layout with overlooking kitchen and bar. Other tables don’t seem very comfortable.
Staff are all nice and professional.
Not worth the price."

"Very great place. Was a bit crowded if I'm being honest, you are almost sitting shoulder to shoulder with the next table.
Food was great, really loved the variety and offerings. A bit on the pricer side though. Unfortunately, not a big deal, but our server added an egg on the rice balls we ordered which was extra charge, but we didn't ask for it. Other than that our server was really great."

The restaurant’s small plates are perfect for sharing, and many are cooked using seasonal and local ingredients.

An izakaya is the Japanese version of a British pub or a Spanish tapas bar, and this one is extraordinary. The vibe is Tokyo underground and though it’s authentic Japanese fare, the specialty here is grilled meats and vegetables, particularly yakitori (skewered chicken). Creative cocktails and a nice selection of sake and Japanese whiskey round out the experience.
