Many diners highlight the exceptional quality of ingredients and the surprising flavor combinations, making it a standout dining experience. "One of the best meals I’ve ever had. The chef’s creativity really stood out, the flavors were unexpected but worked together beautifully. The cocktails were just as impressive: creative, balanced, and fun! The atmosphere was great and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier! Definitely a standout experience!!"

"One of my favorite meals of all time.
Everything was excellent, from the service to the drinks to the food to the atmosphere. From the moment you walk in you can tell this place is a cut above others in the city.
We ordered 2 smaller plates, 2 medium, 2 pasta dishes, drinks, and dessert. It all came out to about 215 dollars, which is great value given the quality. The highlights for me were the romaine salad and the cherry tomato dish - unbelievable ingredient quality.
5/5, 10/10, best in the biz."
Mateo Orrantia
"I visited Bar Kismet last month and had another wonderful experience. I’ve also dined here in September 2021 and 2022, always enjoying the cozy patio, a variety of creative dishes, and great conversations with the staff.
This time, I sat at the bar and was once again blown away—the food, ambiance, and especially the team were exceptional. It’s clear the staff love working here, and that energy shines through in every interaction.
Even though it’s a seven-hour drive from Bar Harbor, Maine, I always make it a point to come back—and I absolutely will again on my next trip in late September. Bar Kismet is hands down my favorite restaurant in Atlantic Canada, and I can’t recommend it enough!"

10 must-try restaurants in Halifax
I’m not sure this qualifies as an “old-guard” restaurant, seeing as it opened in 2017, but the pandemic’s way of skewing time makes Bar Kismet feel like it’s been part of the city’s food scene for much longer. Since its inception, it has been nationally recognized as one of the best restaurants in the country, and for good reason. Its inventive menu includes dishes like carrots, crab and bearnaise (a signature dish), gorgonzola gnocchi with burnt walnut, and a fried smelt sandwich that folks couldn't get enough of, but is off the menu for now.
The Rising Tide of Halifax Cocktails
The first two bars I visited featured cocktails prominently made with the “Italian mint amaro,” as Bar Kismet, my first stop, described an ingredient in their carbonated keg cocktail. At Highwayman, a cocktail bar downtown and my next stop, a Branca Menta Highball was touted on its marquee-like specials board. “It just came into the market last week,” Williston Irvine, the bar manager at Kismet, tells me, adding that it seemed well matched to the emerging local palate.
Halifax's cocktail scene is stirred up and we like what we're sipping
Cormier, who recently opened Bar Kismet, a small seafood restaurant and cocktail bar in Halifax's north end, says the origins go back even further. He cites a group of bartenders from the five or ten years previous, bartenders like Gord Hannah at The Velvet Olive and Cooper Tardivel at Mosaic (both restaurants long since closed) as the first real movers and shakers—movers of shakers, if you will—to set off the cocktail culture revival.
