I’m not sure this qualifies as an “old-guard” restaurant, seeing as it opened in 2017, but the pandemic’s way of skewing time makes Bar Kismet feel like it’s been part of the city’s food scene for much longer. At Highwayman, a cocktail bar downtown and my next stop, a Branca Menta Highball was touted on its marquee-like specials board. “It just came into the market last week,” Williston Irvine, the bar manager at Kismet, tells me, adding that it seemed well matched to the emerging local palate.

Cormier, who recently opened Bar Kismet, a small seafood restaurant and cocktail bar in Halifax's north end, says the origins go back even further. He cites a group of bartenders from the five or ten years previous, bartenders like Gord Hannah at The Velvet Olive and Cooper Tardivel at Mosaic (both restaurants long since closed) as the first real movers and shakers—movers of shakers, if you will—to set off the cocktail culture revival.

One day I randomly popped into Bar Kismet, (which is often touted as the best restaurant in the city), – solo, with no reservation, and just sat at the bar. I don’t remember why, it was just a whimsical decision.

Award-winning for a reason, this cozy spot it ideal for a romantic date or girl dinner. It features some of the best cocktails in town and a sophisticated menu that it executed to a T.

Compass Distillery, on Agricola St - they distill the spirits themselves. El Chino (if you’re there, they have some of the best margaritas (and dumplings) in the city).
