Reviews Summary
McKelvie's offers a refined dining experience in a historic building, praised for its excellent seafood like chowder and lobster dishes, alongside attentive service. However, some diners find certain items, like the lobster roll, to be underwhelming or not worth the price, and the ambiance can sometimes feel impersonal. Despite these criticisms, many enjoy the overall experience and recommend it for its quality ingredients and historic charm.
"From the street closest to the waterfront it had such cute street appeal I had to try it out. Outdoor dining area felt very European. Service was very fast and the food didn't slouch either! Very crispy fish sandwiches. Will definitely return next time I'm in Halifax."

"This was our favorite restaurant while visiting Halifax. We ended up going 2 nights in a row. The food and service were amazing. We both had the sea food chowder on both nights because it's that good. I had the maple pecan salmon the first evening, and the fish fry the second. We will definitely go back the next time we visit Halifax. The restaurant is also decorated beautifully."

"We had dinner at McKelvie’s during our trip to Halifax. Overall, the experience was just okay. The kale salad was the highlight—fresh, well-seasoned, and honestly the best part of the meal. We also ordered the lobster, but it was underwhelming. It lacked flavour and didn’t really stand out, especially compared to other seafood we had on this trip. The jambalaya was another letdown—it didn’t have much depth or spice, and the dish felt a bit flat.
The service was fine and the setting was nice, but the food didn’t leave much of an impression. Nothing was terrible, but nothing was particularly memorable either. It felt like one of those places that’s okay if you’re nearby and hungry, but not one I’d go out of my way to recommend.
I’d give it a 3 out of 5 stars. Not bad, not great—just average."

In a handsome 1906 firehouse across from the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, McKelvie's is that rare find that hits the sweet spot between upscale and down-home. Though all the menu mainstays are here, from oysters Rockefeller to surf and turf, the best bets are the contemporary twists on seafood classics. Although the restaurant has been in business for over 30 years, its look is as fresh as the ingredients used here.
