A winning combo happened when a snack bar with perfect drinking snacks moved into a space with one of Dartmouth’s favourite breweries – North Brewing. Since moving to their current location in downtown Dartmouth, their salty, spicy, big-flavour snacks still come to you alongside a beer flight or pints in their new space. Expect items like Chinese style steamed dumplings in chili oil and black vinegar, mountains of fries dressed like a Vietnamese Bahn Mi sandwich, or a double patty smash burger with gooey orange double cheese slices.

Locals have loved watching Side Hustle evolve from a tap room snack bar to a sleekly designed full-service restaurant on Portland Street in downtown Dartmouth. Partly because husband and wife duo Kathy Jollimore and Brent Darbyson have worked so hard to make it happen, and also because they knock it out of the park with simply delicious food and exceptional cocktails.

This modern bar and restaurant is the ideal spot for folks looking for a great cocktail menu and an equally well-curated wine list. At Side Hustle Snack Bar you’ll find a sample of Nova Scotian and Canadian wines by the glass and bottle as well as a creative snack list (hence the name!) that ranges from crispy brussels sprouts and garlic cheese fries to a savory kimchi mayo burger served on Texas toast.

A little neighbourhood gem serving up playful fare, seasonal craft cocktails, locally-made beers and ciders in downtown Dartmouth. Known for their smash burger, dumplings and over-the-top loaded fries, bring friends and come hungry. Check out brunch every Sunday for winning creations like their East Coast bennie.

This is one of the best burgers in the city and definitely the best smash-style. Soon to be moving from Portland Street (the Cole Harbourish end) to Portland Street (downtown Dartmouth), but we enjoyed it with some North Brewing beers at their original digs in the brewery. *This is The Side Dish’s #1 Pick.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the new favourite burger of the Eat This Town household. We scooted over to Dartmouth just to check out North Brewing’s new digs, and the conjoined Side Hustle Snack Bar. The smash burger is simple, comforting, and eye wateringly good.

I had been to Side Hustle before twice and had such a lovely experience. So I’m not thrilled to write this. But feel the need to share as I am concerned about what happened to me.

Kathy and the team here have nailed upscale fast casual fare (yes it’s a thing!). Bring the family along and be sure to try the famous ‘Smashie’ as well as those dumplings.
