Olivea (39 Brock Street): a family-owned Italian trattoria that claims a prime location overlooking the busy Market Square. They are well loved for their fresh pasta, very impressive wine list, charcuterie and antipasti both sourced locally and from Italy. The owners Stev George and Deanna Harrington are also known for taking a group of their staff each year to Italy so they can share experiences in the food and culture.

Stev George and Deanna Harrington are truly not part of a statistic as their restaurant Olivea, pronounced O-li-vay-a, is the definition of an Italian eatery serving up a variety of Mediterranean style dishes with a loving relationship. From a staff of 30, who rely on this establishment as a livelihood, this place that reminds me of Little Italy back in Montreal has outdone itself for having its doors open since 2008.

They didn't back down from the challenge of buying a property that only came on the market because it has suffered a terrible fire and was gutted inside. They didn't hesitate to embrace the idea of family friendly fine dining and they weren't afraid to teach their staff the true value of Tuscan hospitality through a bit of an unorthodox route.

Olivea in downtown Kingston is a family-run Italian trattoria that serves both traditional and contemporary Italian fare. The food here was absolutely delicious, and it makes for a great spot to come for lunch (or dinner). If you’re visiting Kingston during the crisp autumn or winter months, I highly recommend ordering the Andalusian Tomato & Bread Soup with parmesan.

This family-run modern Italian kitchen in downtown Kingston is right in the heart of the action by the market square but inside it’s a cozy space. Their gnocchi with beef cheek ragu will make you weak in the knees, and their antipasti menu could keep you busy for days. Olivea is an exceptional bargain at lunch, with most dishes costing less than $20.

The race was too close to call, with one of my personal favourites, Casa, narrowly beating their next door neighbour, Olivea, by a single vote. The result is far from a decisive victory, however it serves to highlight the deserved popularity of these two establishments as well as Kingston’s insatiable appetite for fine, authentic Italian fare.

At Olivea, sipping on a lovely glass of their Sussreserve Riesling from the Niagara region perfectly complements their tantalizing garganelli pasta with crispy chicken leg and roasted garlic rosemary cream sauce. The patio's welcoming ambiance and the flavours of Italy will transport you to the sun-kissed streets of the Mediterranean!

A seafood list would not be complete without a restaurant that serves oysters. This restaurant was opened in 2008 by Deanna Harrington and Stev George. The owners are committed to enhancing their guests’ experience and so each year they take a group of their staff to Italy for training on Italian food, wine, and culture.

We had the fresh Marg and the rosemary fizz (I think, it was a non alcoholic rosemary and grapefruit juice). Both were outstanding, and I loved how the non alcoholic drink was a good size!. Oysters - they were so perfectly prepared.
