It is amazing how much they pack into this beautiful limestone building, from truly artisan breads, one of the best craft cheese selections in Eastern Ontario, upscale fresh foods and frozen meals, inside dining and, the reason for this blog post, an outdoor patio. It’s worth working your way through the busy store to get to the back, where the building and fencing has carved out a lovely patio with umbrellas and trees for shade. It seems like this could be the set up for an over hyped, commercialized coffee shop, but every time you walk into Pan Chancho you are overwhelmed with the simplicity that only a local cafe like this can bring.

The story of Pan Chancho, and it's sister restaurant Chez Piggy, is the stuff of Canadian food legend. Founded in 1979 by bona fide rock star, Zal Yanovsky of The Lovin' Spoonful, and his wife Rose Richardson, Chez Piggy led the wave of fine dining, innovative food, and even reviving heritage buildings in downtown Kingston. Pan Chancho was first established to supply Chez Piggy with European-quality bread and grew to become a full service bakery, gourmet take out counter, small cafe, and specialty food shop.

This locally owned, European-style cafe is checking off all the boxes for an amazing brunch; a charming aesthetic, food made from scratch, and a key location in the heart of downtown Kingston. We love the Weekender (two eggs over easy on a croissant with bacon, chives, and 2-year-old cheddar), the French toast, and the southwestern breakfast wrap (ranchero scrambled eggs, Monterey Jack, and refried black beans in a flour tortilla with roasted corn salad, sour cream, and chili machismo).

Fresh bread, zaatar or cheese manakeesh, spinach-filled fatayer, lahmoujain… one batch of famous Lebanese delicacies rolls out after another from El Gourmet’s in-store, live bakery, to warm your heart and feast your senses. Everything is so meticulously rolled, richly filled and baked just enough to leave you satisfied yet craving for more. You simply cannot walk out of El Gourmet before you have eaten some off the bakery counter and ordered some to take-away.

Pan Chancho was opened by musician Zal Yanovsky (of the Lovin’ Spoonful fame) in the ’80s. Today, it’s kitted out with a $30,000 bread oven — all the better to supply nearby restaurants with sourdough daily — and is still family-run. You might have to line up for weekend brunch on the back patio, but if that’s not your style, grab a pastry to go.

Day 2 started early at 7AM for one of the best places to eat breakfast in Kingston, Pan Chancho Bakery. Pan Chancho was opened by the original founders of Chez Piggy restaurant, Rose Richardson & Zalman Yanovsky, to provide hand-made bread to be used in Chez Piggy. It has since then grew to include a cafe and restaurant as well.

Pan Chancho is a dog-friendly bakery, café, and deli in Kingston, ON. Fido is welcome to join you on the patio at a table with an umbrella. The café serves brunch and lunch, with several vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. You can also pick up deli meats, sandwiches, freshly baked bread, pantry staples, and sweet treats.

Pan Chancho may not be considered cheap, but as long as you choose some of the less expensive items on the menu, you’ll be able to enjoy one of the best brunches in Kingston. Most items hover around $13, and each dish is unique and tasty. If traditional brunch isn’t your style, I would recommend trying Pan Chancho.

Pan Chancho is excellent for nice weekend brunch (on Princess between King and Ontario), and lunch (I like it because their menu is interesting - they include ingredients you might not buy/make very often yourself. It's more like 15$ for a meal though, so not necessarily where to go for CHEAP brunch).

Pan Chancho Bakery was by far my favourite place in Kingston and if there’s one spot you choose to eat at when you’re stopping in the town, make it here. The ever-popular Pan Chancho has some incredible plant-based options. This includes a tofu scramble wrap and my all-time favourite, the Calling All Vegans. It’s basically a super-fresh bowl of greens, sweet potato, chopped veggies, nuts and seeds, avocado, and a cashew sauce on top.

Pan Chancho: I grab the frozen pizza dough to store in my freezer but they have so many other delicious take homes – quiche, salmon fillet, veggie baked pasta and more!
