Reviews Summary

Restaurant Mastard is highly praised for its inventive tasting menu, creative Quebecois cuisine, and exceptional service, offering a memorable fine dining experience at an affordable price. While portions are small, they add up to a satisfying meal. The atmosphere is warm and intimate, making it a must-visit in Montreal.

"Might be the best dinner I’ve ever had. Awesome curated set menu. Sat for multiple hours with great conversations. Took the load off of ordering and let the restaurant decide. Better than Michelin Star places I have been and for half or a third of the price. Congrats on the recent star and will cherish the dinner forever."

Adam Brewster

"One of the best dining experiences I've ever had in Montreal and that says a lot for a city full of good food.

Mastard exemplifies simple yet beautiful cooking. Everything on your plate has been thought through - from how the elements taste together to the elegant presentation.

The duck dish really stood out to me with the depth of flavour in the dual sauces. I could taste the rich, earthly unami singing in my mouth. The meringue dessert also contained a delightful surprise - I always appreciate when chefs add some playfulness to their dessert instead of falling back on sorbet/ice cream.

Although it was only 5 courses, I left fully satisfied. The craziest part is that the tasting menu doesn't break the bank and it's one of the most affordable in the city.

Mastard is well worthy of their Michelin star. I rarely revisit restaurants (I like to try new places) but this is at the top of my list."

Claire Hoon

"Been to other Michelin restaurants and had to pay triple the price. This is very reasonable. Very nice food from Canada and Quebec. There’s a Cornish hen that was so so tender. Fish from Nova Scotia is very good too. Portions are small but they add up and so we walked out with a full stomach. No food is waste and we liked it. Service was good and comfortable. Drinks are so so pretty and delicate."

The 24 Best Restaurants In Montreal - Montreal

Mastard’s location in Villeray puts the restaurant in context—it’s deeply rooted in Québec culture, with a modern (and molecular) vision. The hyperlocal five-course menu changes frequently, but past highlights include Québec halibut with broccoli and sunflower milk, cherry tomatoes with pork bouillon and local camelina oil, and a dessert that layered different textures of raspberry, from sorbet to powder. We’re always impressed by the subtle melding of flavors and plating here, especially when the meal starts with a slice of their signature savory tart filled with silky lettuce or sweet corn.

What is it: A gourmet kitchen where seasonal vegetables, locally-raised meats and fish from up the Saint Lawrence are honored and prepared like nowhere else. Picture half a tomato buried in herbs, bathed in smoked beef fat and served hot; a spice-crusted braised leek with an old-fashioned mustard cream and meat juice; a celery root "steak" in a smoked ham and hazelnut butter broth, topped with fish roe. With Mastard, chef-owner Simon Mathys can finally express the full extent of his talent and imagination without barriers.

The Best Restaurants in Montreal, Quebec

This Quebecois restaurant in Rosemont is nerdy—and I mean that as a compliment. Chef Simon Mathys is hyper-focused on the province’s history and cuisine. He combs through old Quebecois cookbooks and combines this research with his creativity, like churning spring radishes into a cream to pair with raw scallops from Îles-de-la-Madeleine and homemade brioche.
