Although this stylish and contemporary cafe buzzes with brunchers on the weekends and serves up a fine selection of artisanal pizza, they shot to the top of foodie lists with their take on the croissant-donut hybrid culinary sensation. Invented by New York City chef Dominique Ansel in 2013, and aptly named the cronut, here the irresistible blends are made fresh daily and this “part fine boulangerie in Paris part funky café in Brooklyn” remains the top spot for the trendy treat throughout a city hot on the tails of the newest food obsessions. Each and every day the classic cinnamon-sugar croissant-like dough is filled with various flavours so expect to find concoctions like Cherry Pistachio, Chai and the ever popular Peanut Butter and Jelly “O-Towner”.

Art Is In Bakery is run by classically trained pastry chef Kevin Mathieson and his wife Stephanie, and has been in operation in some form or another for 10 years. We arrived just after the lunchtime rush, but we were still able to catch a glimpse of the tantalising fresh pastries on the counter before we went to see their famous bread being made behind-the-scenes.

A favourite of locals and visitors alike, Art-Is-In Bakery serves up some of the best artisan bread in the city, and is continually recommended as one of Ottawa’s best bakeries. This scratch bakery located in a trendy industrial area of the city, is family owned and has a wide selection of delicious fresh baked bread. Their sourdough and levain breads are a bakery staple, and their dynamite loaves in flavours like Rosemary Garlic and Jalapeño cheddar are the perfect accompaniment to any meal, or a perfect base for a tasty sandwich.

The Cronut is a croissant / doughnut hybrid that came onto the food scene in the past couple of years and is alive and well at Art Is In Bakery in Hintonburg. Every Thursday, the baking team concocts a new creation based on their popular Kronut, so keep an eye out for over the top confections weekly, selling for $5.25.

A great venue for couples looking for indoor things to do in Ottawa, this place attracted the likes of Guy Fieri. Yep – it’s that good!. Brimming with freshly baked goodies, this is the kind of place that lends itself well to casual first dates.

It doesn’t matter which you prefer because it is all good at Art-Is-In-Bakery. They are famous for their pizza nights, bread, and cronuts. I personally loved their lemon meringue tart and the avocado toast with poached eggs and fries.

They brand themselves as an “edgy gastro-bakery” with a unique character. Luckily, Art-Is-In-Bakery lives up to that promise. They offer an assortment of freshly baked pastries, cakes, and cupcakes that are delicious and artistic.
