Fly into Fauna on Bank Street and you’ll enjoy Jon Svazas’s Nouveau Canadian concept which is such a hit that it claimed the 65th spot on Canada’s Top 100 Restaurants list. The former shoe shop was transformed into an open concept space, outfitted with mixed materials, from exposed brick walls, to wooden detailing, statement lighting, and a zinc topped bar. Fauna’s mixology program offers plenty of inspiration including a tomato-free kimchi caesar and egg white topped sour muddled with gin and local craft beer.

It was at Fauna, on Bank Street beside Frank Street, where I overheard the anniversary celebrants who had returned for their traditional dry-aged rib-eye steak for two ($120). Coincidentally, before that couple arrived, we had just polished off that super-savoury feast for two, replete with cheesy potatoes, mushrooms, turnips, kale and cippolini. It was a carnal indulgence to leave beef-lovers swooning, with a seam of funky flavour well developed over 80 days of dry-aging.

Having gained its reputation in Ottawa’s culinary world, Fauna is where you’ll find a flair of flavours from France, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, and Japan!. With all the huge windows looking out into Bank Street, a cozy red brick wall, elegant ambiance, and impressive food & wine menu, Fauna is promised to satisfy all tastes, desires, and feelings!

Move past the bustling crowds at the front and you’ll find an equally amazing private room with space for 24 guests.

Fauna’s dining room is casual with a brick wall taking up one side of the room, dark wood tables and a large light fixture overlooking the bar. The menu features local products and the cuisine is simple yet creative with a desire to let the products shine. The kitchen is fond of raw dishes, so expect sensational crudos, tatakis and tartares.

Fauna refers to the animals of a particular region or habitat. It also happens to be a seasonally driven restaurant on the hustling and bustling Bank Street that supports local farmers and producers whenever possible. Chef Jon Svazas, the owner and operator of Fauna, studied culinary arts at Algonquin College in 2004.

**I dropped by Fauna for a very early dinner on Sunday before the drive back to Montreal. The place was almost empty but the welcome was friendly and attentive. Fauna recently made the Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list at number 75, one of only two restaurants in Ottawa.
