Small dishes are served in the purest tradition of izakayas (Japanese taverns) in a venue that's flooded with light and minimally decorated with birch and green plants. On the menu are just classics: yakitori (mini skewers), sashimi, okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), and dumplings, as well as a tataki that changes daily. The cocktails are as pretty as they are tasty (case in point with the Japanese Eyeball), but the real star here is the list of imported sake.

Cette brasserie japonaise a fait la liste Canada’s 100 Best peu de temps après son ouverture en 2020, dans le quartier Saint-Roch. Elle propose un décor minimaliste hyper léché, typique du Japon, ainsi que des plats traditionnels et réconfortants, qu’on partage en bonne compagnie. Simple, mais bien exécuté, c’est un peu comme si on vivait le Japon à Québec.

Honō Izakaya - This cozy hotspot with Japanese small plates was exactly what we were looking for on our last night in the city. We ordered edamame, marinated cucumbers, miso salmon sake, sashimi, a rice bowl and pork and shrimp dumplings. Every dish was fresh and the sashimi was melt-in-your-mouth good.

We immersed ourselves in the dining experience inspired by Japanese izakayas. The atmosphere was casual yet stylish and the food was delicious. We enjoyed trying the different skewers, fresh seafood, and creative combinations.

I would recommend the Toraya Ramen and the Hono Izakaya, both on St Joseph, if you are into Japanese food.
