Reviews Summary

Ernie's Coffee Shop offers a delightful blend of comfort food and innovative seasonal dishes in a cozy setting. While many praise the delicious food, creative menu, and friendly service, some diners find the prices a bit high and note that the restaurant can be quite noisy during peak hours. It's a popular spot that seems to have successfully modernized its offerings while retaining a welcoming atmosphere.

"This is Brooklyn or Toronto’s Ossington in Sault Ste. Marie: a perfectly calibrated hipster vibe, beards and cute black tops and clever tats aplenty, and deep cuts bumping on the overhead Polks.

My Pisco Sour was gorgeous, tasty and arrived in a vintage champagne glass. The scallop crudo was served on a delicate grandma plate and so was the delicious local trout. The low lighting is perfect. They could build a Soho House around this place.

Apparently Ernie’s was once a regular diner now gone way upmarket, but they’ve kept some of the old familiars. I ended with coconut cream pie, which had just the right dash of old school to keep it real. Highly recommended."

"During our stay we stumbled across this little cafe near our hotel. Wow. Great vibe and absolutely delicious food. You may need to wait awhile for your food but it well worth the wait. It was so busy we had to eat at the bar. Recommend getting reservations on the weekend. The chicken supreme was absolutely delicious and Caesar salad the best we have ever had. My husband really enjoyed the Mary’s Blue Chicken sandwich. Will definitely be back."

"Stopped here on our way to Batchawana Bay and had a great time! Such a cute spot, staff is really nice, our cocktails were delicious and the food was super tasty! The shrimp toast and the asparagus special were are favorites of the meal, but everything was great. The portions were pretty big for us and we unfortunately didn’t have room for dessert but took the rest of the food with us and it was a nice snack later on :). We’ll definitely be back if we head through Saul St. Marie again."

The menu is seasonal, but our eyes are glued to the chalkboard for the daily inspirations of the chef. Squash crostini with chili oil, sage and house-made ricotta or thinly sliced kohlrabi and cucumber, enlivened with red onion, dill and feta reflect the sophistication and passion of the chef to make fresh ingredients sing. 24-hour brined, pressure-fried chicken and delicate pan-seared lake trout leaning on a sublime crunchy potato stack are simply wholesome lip-smacking goodness.

While its iconic neon sign and diner decor have been a Sault staple since 1971, Ernie’s Coffee Shop is much more than what the name suggests. Owned and operated by its namesake Ernie Febbraro, it was sold in January of 2020 to current owner John Armstrong. This Sault native has come back to his hometown, bringing with him some of the big city flair he’s learned from being chef of establishments like Union Restaurant in Toronto.

Our Guide to Delicious Eats in Sault Ste. Marie

Seriously, when we tell you not to miss a visit to Ernie’s Coffee Shop, we are not messing around. This spot was hyped up to us from just about every local we met and for good reason. Built inside a beloved 1970s diner, Ernie’s was taken over a few years ago and while the building still pays homage to that classic feel (think mini jukeboxes at your table and that milkshake bar), the menu is modern and delicious.
