Exposed stone walls, original paintings, and chic furnishings make for a serene (if dark) dining atmosphere in this restored heritage building right downtown. With two different menus (one for dinner, one for the bar) and a wine bar upstairs, this restaurant covers it all: the short but classic dinner menu features steak, seafood, lamb, and poultry while the bar menu displays some international influences. There's a lengthy international wine list with a decent selection available by the glass in addition to many cocktails.

Happy Hour at this Duckworth Street restaurant and lounge is very happy indeed. The daily offerings at Magnum & Steins include a selection of martinis like the fruity/boozy Mags Starburst and Melontini, along with glasses of prosecco and draft local beer. Happy Hour bites include their housemade wings with a daily flavour combination, french fries tossed with parmesan and Newfoundland Savoury and their iconic Duck Confit Nachos made with fried wontons and topped with duck confit, carrot and ginger slaw, and sweet and spicy sesame soy sauce.

I went on a nacho quest for The Telegram this year and, while I tried many, I only found a few plates that excited my palate. The one that stood out most has also stood the test of time on the dining scene in St. John’s: the duck confit nachos at Magnum & Steins with crispy fried wontons topped with pulled duck, carrot and ginger slaw and a sweet, spicy sesame soy sauce are a great spin on pub fave.

This local Restaurant, Wine & Cocktail Bar offers fresh seasonal local food. Their dinner menu features appetizers like Beef Tartare and Fresh Oysters, salads including Caesar and Caprese, and entrees such as Beef Tenderloin, Chicken, Lamb Rack, and Stuffed Baked Tomato. Wine pairings are also suggested for each dish.

For a quiet evening out, you can enjoy a glass of wine at Magnum and Stein’s intimate patio on Duckworth Street. A true hidden gem, this laidback wine bar features a sumptuous seasonal menu and a three-course meal with a wine pairing menu. You can also drop by for Happy Hour and bites.

Raymond's is a world class restaurant and priced accordingly. Mallard Cottage isn't really my thing, I find the entire local/foraged/fusion thing hit or miss but many love it. Cinched is also great.

With a variety of different entrees to choose from you're all set to focus on the more important aspects of the night. Did I mention they have red velvet creme brulee for dessert?
