However my recommendation for best Fish & Chips ever experienced goes to The Inn at Happy Adventure (originally Chucky’s Fish and Chips in St. John’s before relocating) on Newman Sound near Eastport on the Road to the Beaches. Fish can be many different varieties but in Newfoundland it always means cod and they obtain such an outstanding high quality product that is so fresh, moist, flaky, and flavourful. Probably helps to have Happy Adventure Sea Products (1991) Ltd. business right next door.

The prime time for a real George Street experience is at night on weekends. During the busy summer months, you’ll always find places open to grab a drink or bite to eat any night of the week, but you’re likely to only see the biggest crowds from Thursday-Saturday nights, unless there’s a special event happening. On a nice day there are plenty of outdoor decks as well for your vacation drinking and dining needs.

the Duke of Duckworth, at 325 Duckworth Street has been a staple of the St. John’s social scene for over 25 years. it's as vital to the city’s culture as the meal for which it is very well-known. the Duke’s Fish & Chips is one of the freshest tasting meals one can buy in the city, and this, combined with a vintage interior and relaxing atmosphere makes this pub a must try for any seafood lover.

The afternoon is devoted to accompanying a group of divers from the Ocean Quest company who are picking scallops. The scallops are harvested by hand in cold water, and at a depth of more than 18 metres (60 feet). Once the divers have come up, after more than an hour underwater, we get to sample these fresh molluscs which are lightly seared on a small propane stove.

This sports bar is arguably the most well known drinking establishment in St. John's. I haven't seen Republic of Doyle yet (that will change soon enough!), but I've heard The Duke of Duckworth is featured in some episodes of this popular CBC show filmed on location in St. John's. (Or they are using a set that's made to look like the Duke of Duckworth).

Many bars in Corner Brook are attached to hotels, including the Crown and Moose Pub (48 West Street, Corner Brook), a quintessential Canadian pub connected to the local Holiday Inn. The stately Glynmill Inn is home to King Henry’s Pub (1B Cobb Lane, Corner Brook), one of the few Corner Brook bars serving red pints of Smithwick’s.

If it’s your first time to Newfoundland, you’re probably going to hear about a tradition called “Getting Screeched In”. This refers to a ceremony to make you an honorary Newfoundlander. It’s a fun thing to do in St. John’s and consists of kissing a codfish, reciting a Newfoundland phrase, and drinking a shot of Screech whiskey.

I’ve read in multiple places that the Duke of Duckworth serves the best plate of fish n’ chips in the province and after tasting it for myself I couldn’t argue. There have a ton of local beers on offer and plenty on tap.

Best place to grab a bite of fee and chi and cold pints.The history alone makes The Duke Of Duckworth worth checking out. Many people say it's haunted but others say it simply has a lot of character. One thing is for sure, you'll get a true taste of Newfoundland's food and friendly culture.

I will say, however, that George Street Fest is completely worth experiencing at least once. At this festival (and other events), the entire area shuts down. You pay one cover charge to enter the street, and you’re free to drink beers between bars and while watching an outdoor concert.

And there's no shortage of places to find modern twists on traditional favourites such as Jiggs dinner (boiled salt beef with carrot, cabbage, turnip, pease pudding and potato), figgy duff raisin pudding and desserts made with indigenous blueberries, partridge berries and bakeapples.

Take a walk down Duckworth or Water Street in St. John’s, and virtually any telephone pole will have a sign pointing you in the direction of some live music and a pint. Make sure your island visit includes some local craft ales (like Quidi Vidi or Bootleg Brew) and oceanfresh fare.

It is easy to go on a pub crawl in downtown St. John's or even just on George Street, though some of the better pubs such as The Ship Inn, The Rose and Thistle, Erin's Pub and The Duke of Duckworth lie outside George Street (of course some good ones are on George Street too).

We have been going to The Duke of Duckworth ever since we were allowed in. It is a favourite haunt for many local musicians, artists, and sports fans alike, and has arguably the best fish and chips in town. Add on dressing and gravy and you’ve got a true Newfoundland feast.

Everyone who visits St. John’s walks away with a favorite downtown pub. Mine is the Duke of Duckworth. It’s tucked away on a small side street and has a good mix of local and international beer.

A long wood bar and stained-glass hanging lights evoke a classic British pub until you notice the video lottery terminals off to one side. The Duke, as locals call it, is as relaxed as it gets.
