In a city filled with hundreds of sushi spots, it can be hard to pick one to try. Look no further than Minami—the Japanese restaurant's space and menu is just as stylish as the neighborhood it's in. This upscale eatery specializes in Aburi ("flame-seared") sushi, and all their fish is sustainably caught.

The lowdown: Sister restaurants Miku and Minami are the crowned queens of aburi-style, flame-seared sushi, which owner Seigo Nakamura introduced to Canada 11 years ago when he first opened Miku on West Pender in downtown Vancouver. It eventually moved into its current location overlooking Burrard Harbour near Canada Place, while Minami acts as the lively younger sibling in fun-loving Yaletown.

There’s going out for sushi, and then there’s going to Minami, sister restaurant to internationally acclaimed Miku. Tucked into the busy Yaletown area of downtown Vancouver, Minami is known for its delicate and modern interpretation of flame–seared sushi. Here, sushi and sashimi are made with sustainably sourced seafood, accompanied by unforgettable small plates like the Saikyo Miso Sablefish in a miso reduction and the Aburi Lobster Mentaiko Udon with truffle sauce and yuzu ginger salsa.

When it comes to where to dine in Vancouver, Miku ( 200 Granville St #70) and their sister restaurant Minami (1118 Mainland St, Vancouver) are where I would recommend generally. Known for innovative Aburi-style (sear-torched sushi), Miku and Minami are two best romantic restaurants in Vancouver to check out or any other occasion really. Both restaurants are wonderful for a dine-in experience with Miku having waterfront views and Minami being a sleek stylish Yaletown eatery.

The speciality at Yaletown’s Minami is aburi oshi sushi—lightly pressed and flame-torched rectangles of saucy, mouth-melting sushi bliss. Rolls here are delicious, but nothing compares to the buttery bite of the salmon oshi sushi (easily reason enough to visit) and the lime-spiked bite of the ebi oshi. The atmosphere, in keeping with the neighbourhood’s yuppie-ish character, is slickly refined and “big date” appropriate, though you may easily pop in for a casual lunch.

Minami in Yaletown doesn't exactly conjure to mind the idea of a patio experience but, in fact, the hidden backyard oasis at this high-end sushi restaurant is a real gem. Ensconced in greenery and hedgerows this patio has a lounge area and outdoor tables for parties of two to four. It's also the perfect place to take in Minami's happy hour, another seriously underrated offering—ebi fritters are just $9 and the aburi sampler is $7.

If you are up for the best sushi, make a stop at Miku’s sister restaurant for the mouth-melting Aburi Oshi sushi. This lightly- pressed and flame-seared smoky dish, when paired with some seafood dishes and your favorite wine—is a can’t-miss delicacy for your taste buds. And if you are up for rolls, try their Red Wave Roll and Champagne Roll stuffed with Hokkaido scallop, salmon, and cucumber, and brushed with golden tobiko sauce.

These sister restaurants are actually named for a pair of sisters: owner Seigo Nakamura’s daughters. Chef Hayashi, the owner of Miku, founded a sister restaurant, Minami, to bring more of the best sushi to Downtown Vancouver. Minami features luxurious dining rooms, a lounge area, a patio and a cocktail bar. You’ll find yourself wishing you could stay forever.

Minami has some pretty awesome walls, intricately painted with Japanese fish that reflect the traditional art of Koi fish painting. That’s why we were glad to score a seat right below it!. Hands down, our favorite has got to be the premium Aburi oshi trio.

Minami is a sister restaurant to the popular Miku restaurant, and I think I actually prefer eating here. The sushi is also pretty expensive, but I find myself liking the options at Minami more. Be sure to make a reservation because it gets super busy!

It is often compared to the popular Miku (at Canada Place), but I like the atmosphere here better. There are no crowds of tourists, the place is newer and more stylishly renovated. The menu, prices and quality of food at both restaurants are similar.

The (long) weekend is calling and so is our Premium Zen lunch set. Featuring a selection of six seasonal kobachi dishes... Minami Restaurant is located in Yaletown, a vibrant neighborhood in Vancouver.

Locals recommend Minami for sushi, Anh and Chi for pho, or Marutama for Ramen. Alternatively, you can eat at one of the cafes and restaurants inside Stanley Park itself. Update: 1886 is now closed.

Why You Need To Go: This is one of Wan's favourite spots for sushi and drinks. The Aburi Chirashi Tart, Champagne Roll, Ebi Fritters, and Humboldt Squid Katsu are all a must-try at this restaurant.

Minami is home to an intimate Japanese-inspired Zen garden patio tucked away in Yaletown. It’s a romantic place to dine on the restaurant’s signature flame-seared sushi, along with a sake flight.

So you like Japanese food and you have something to celebrate?. Minami is where you go!. You have to order the Aburi Oshi Sushi (can't go wrong with the sampler platter) and Sashimi Platter.

Minami in Yaletown—hands down—has some of the best sushi in Vancouver. Don't be fooled by their chic interior—this restaurant is totally kid-friendly. There are always plenty of kiddos here.

For Japanese food - Minami (Yaletown) and Miku (downtown) are both highly rated for Japanese fine dining. I haven't been to either.
