Thinly sliced beef carpaccio is plated in traditional fashion, then topped with a flavorful leek-accented aioli, and creste di gallo is an ideal pasta for the richly flavored lamb ragu with zippy sage and pecorino.

Enter through a massive floor-to-ceiling door and walk into a buzzy space dominated by warm millwork. The space was designed by Ste Marie Studio’s Craig Stanghetta, the local wunderkind behind several gorgeous Vancouver spots, who opened this Mount Pleasant neighborhood destination with celebrated restaurateur Paul Grunberg. But you’re not here just to ogle the room.

This classic neighbourhood osteria features a simple and excellent menu of rustic Italian cuisine. House-made pasta, wood-grilled meats and veggies, fresh fish, and artisanal baked goods fill the menu, all made with seasonal ingredients from the area. Dishes can be served family-style for larger groups.

The fluid menu changes frequently, but already there are some stalwart dishes that have become sought-after signatures: a bagna cauda of such warmth and depth that it grounds the entire dining experience as a joint venture between diner and chef, an old-school garlic bread that shows a kitchen confident enough to put delicious before stylish, a take on rosemary-lemon grilled chicken that sets the city’s standard with its balance of rusticity and class—all backed by old country-inspired cocktails and a hyper-focused all-Italian wine list that’s only slightly more dense than Dante’s Inferno (but far more rewarding). This East Vancouver Italian darling is meant to be a real neighbourhood joint, and though it can be hard to nail down a reso, once you're in, you're like family. Kids dining at Savio Volpe get a cool cardboard fox mask to play with (and take home, if you don't get pasta sauce all over it); "volpe" means fox, incidentally. There's no children's menu here, but then there doesn't need to be--the kitchen is turning out beautiful handmade pasta dishes, homey classics like roast chicken, and unfussy sides and starters that yield plenty of good eats little mouths can easily nibble on.

The Rocana Pork Chop comes soaked in all the smokiness from the wood fire grill, and for the money you pay, every bite you take of the pork chop makes every penny worth it. Since its opening, Savio Volpe has been raking in the awards and accolades for very obvious reasons. Not only is the retro-cool decor very inviting, the simple Italian dishes are so perfectly balanced and tasty. Maybe it’s the handmade pasta, maybe it’s the best kale salad known to man, but it’s definitely the formula of all of those, mixed with a fine glass of Italian wine or perfectly balanced Negroni that will make you salivate whenever you hear the words Savio Volpe.

It is pretty telling that I went to Savio Volpe (615 Kingsway), kids in tow, and still managed to have a fantastic dinner. Not even a fight about Legos between our kids, carried out under our table, could shake our fixation on superbly executed bold Italian food like rich bagna cauda, simple roast chicken with lemon, house-made pastas, and gelati. A well-timed delivery of crayons and color-it-yourself fox masks possibly saved the night from going off the rails.

News of the fresh hand-made pasta made daily by Chef Mark Perrier has probably reached your ears, and with the rotating selection of Tagliatelle, Francobolli, and Linguine to name a few, we can safely say that’s a huge draw for diners to return. “Today’s Menu’” at Savio is just that: “Today”. The ever-changing lineup gives the adventurous diner something to satiate their cravings, and then something different for the next visit.

Savio Volpe is a bit out of the way from downtown but it is totally worth the drive if you’re looking to treat yourself. Seriously, I’m talking some of the best Italian food I’ve ever had. The menu changes constantly, but all the food is made fresh with local ingredients. I brought a friend along so I could sample more dishes #priorities and we were both blown away.

We’re happy to say that Savio Volpe is one of the few places that does ‘modern rustic’ perfectly. We recommend grabbing a few friends and dining family-style here since you’re going to want a taste of practically everything on the menu. Speaking of family dining, they’ve got a special for Wednesdays, offering complimentary kids pasta meals in the shape of foxes.

When I reviewed Savio Volpe in May, I chided the owners for masquerading as a neighbourhood restaurant. This upscale osteria, I argued, was actually a hot-ticket destination restaurant. The honestly rustic Canadian-Italian fare, voluptuously drenched in anchovy butter and tickled with unabashed nostalgia (think tinfoil-wrapped garlic bread).

Dinner at Savio Volpe: One place you can’t miss whilst in Vancouver is Savio Volpe. This has to be one of my favourite restaurants during our whole visit (shhhh, don’t tell the others), it’s a little outside the city centre (about 10-minutes by taxi) and it’s worth every second!
