Reviews Summary

Q at the Fairmont Empress offers a luxurious dining experience with exceptional service and beautiful harbour views, making it ideal for special occasions. While many praise the attentive staff, stunning ambiance, and the unique Empress Gin cocktails, some diners find the food quality to be inconsistent with the high prices, and service can occasionally be slow or inattentive. The traditional afternoon tea is a standout experience, though it's recommended to book well in advance.

"Another great restaurant and bar in a Fairmont. The menu is higher than average, but what you do get for it is great quality food, attentive service, and comfortable seating in an amazing setting. Worth trying even if it's just for the (complimentary) popcorn and purple Empress gin.

I visited this place every day I stayed in the city and will surely return.

Note: this review is for lunch and dinner. (I would go elsewhere for breakfast or brunch, personally.)"

Kristine Cavey

"Had to experience the Empress Gin when we were in Victoria Island. We got an Empress French 75 and a Empress Gin and tonic. Both were delicious. We got a 3rd drink but I don’t remember the name. We got the Korean cauliflower and it was yummy. The view of the marina was perfect. The restaurant wasn’t open when we were there but we just wanted a cocktail."

Joanne S

"Dining at Q at the Empress was an exercise in frustration, overpriced disappointment, and basic hospitality failures. This place rides entirely on its historic location and name — because it certainly isn’t surviving on food quality or service.

Let’s begin with the food: I ordered sunny side up eggs and toast. What I got were dry, overcooked eggs that might as well have been fried in a forgotten corner of the kitchen. The yolks were stiff — not a hint of "sunny side" to be found. The toast wasn’t toasted — it was plain bread. Flimsy, flavorless, and thrown on the plate like an afterthought. Absolutely unacceptable for a place that pretends to be fine dining.

Service? Just as bad. Our server (Amanda) was flighty, distracted, and visibly flustered. She dropped our utensils while clearing the table — again, no apology — and nearly served us cloudy, murky water that looked like it came from a tap no one’s cleaned in a week.

Oh, and let’s not forget the coffee. After all the above, I figured at least I could enjoy a hot cup to salvage the morning. But no — they had no cream. None. At a high-end breakfast service, they couldn’t even provide cream for coffee. What kind of operation is this?

Q at the Empress is overpriced, overrated, and under-delivering in every possible way. The kitchen needs a complete overhaul — starting with firing the chef — and the front-of-house staff desperately needs retraining. This experience was a total embarrassment to the Empress name."

Fairmont Empress, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada - Hotel Review

Q at the Empress serves contemporary Pacific Northwest cuisine, Q Bar is a classy spot for a nightcap (accompanied by live music every evening), and the Veranda offers signature cocktails, shareable plates, and s'mores on a terrace overlooking the water. But the pièce de résistance is the Empress afternoon tea, a tradition since 1908. Yes, it’s pricey and old-fashioned, but it's also a whole lot of fun—and I’m in love with their signature Rose Congou Loose Leaf Tea, which you can also bring home by the (very heavy) bag.

Candlelight dances beneath a carved mahogany ceiling at the Fairmont Empress hotel's flagship restaurant, where one of the two gracious rooms has expansive harbor views. One of our favourite places for a refreshing sipper is the swish Q Bar at the Fairmont Empress, especially in summer when the scene spills out onto the hotel’s sweeping veranda. Now the bar team has released a new menu that celebrates all the flowers that bloom around town, with drinks like the Rose Petal Punch (Campari, brandy, rose petal tea, strawberries, honey, lemon, cloves, sparkling water), which you can order by the glass or the pitcher. But we’re even more excited about The Last Train to Paris, a luxuriously modern take on the classic Sidecar.

Truly, there is no more iconic experience in Victoria than taking tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. This grand old dame of Victorian architecture, with its lovely rose gardens and elegant public rooms, is a must-visit no matter what, but it’s so much better to enjoy it from the plush, rose-and-cream Tea Lobby with a pot of Empress Blend tea and a tiered tray of little sandwiches and teensy baked goods. Be sure to reserve your spot well ahead of time, especially during the busy summer months.
