When management encourages “Dancing on the bar and any other flat surface,” you know you’re in for a lively night, especially when a punk band is performing onstage in the heart of the Whistler-Blackcomb resort. The DJ station is a suspended gondola car. The wood interior gives Merlin’s a rustic feel – but don’t expect country and western or anything mellow.

Garibaldi Lift Company (GLC) Bar and Grill is a favourite Whistler bar for après, located on top of the Whistler Village gondola building. Across the way is the Longhorn Saloon which is always packed with a young crowd, or for a more relaxed civilized option, try the Blacks pub next door. The Dubh Linn Gate Irish pub is also located in this area, and true to their roots they often have live Irish music.

Located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, Merlin’s almost seems like it was built for aprés ski. Merlin’s is the kind of place where dancing on the bar, enjoying a shot-ski with friends, and soaking up the sun with a pint (or several) is encouraged. The outdoor patio is expansive, and the inside is decorated like a mountain chalet with chair lifts hanging from the rafters and log cabin walls.

For dining in Blackcomb (or “upper village”) we enjoyed Milestones for its excellent black garlic Caesar with grilled salmon (vegetables! a treat!) and lobster bisque, and Merlin’s Bar and Grill for its hopping vibe and singable tunes. Both restaurants offer some variant of “epic nachos” which they say feed four, but we took the leftovers home for a second round, so I’d say closer to eight.

If you happen to be in Creekside, Dusty’s is a good spot with live music late into the night, while Merlin’s is our choice at the base of Blackcomb: it has all the slopeside après convenience of our favorites on the Whistler side. They do lunch (and, if you’re getting a late start to the day, bloody marys that look like a small buffet in a glass), dinner, and après with live music or DJs.

During the Games, Kokanee Beer will transform Merlin’s patio into the Kokanee Cabin with a massive tent adorned with timber, moose heads, plasma tvs, and bubbly promo girls dishing out cold brewskis.

Merlins – Located in the Upper Village at the base of the Blackcomb Gondola, Merlin’s has a log cabin vibe with vintage ski and Whistler paraphernalia. The DJ booth is actually an old gondola. An amazing spot for aprés-ski drinks, Merlin’s would also make for a great rehearsal dinner or welcome party.

This ski après, take in the view of a setting sun through Merlin’s large glass windows and prepare for a night of fun. Every Thursday, enjoy après with DJ Shotski as he takes station in the suspended gondola car!. Then on Friday, kick it with the local rocker band, Hairfarmers, beginning at 3:30 pm.

Or stay close to home, venture across the highway to Dusty’s Bar to the go-to aprés spot. Dusty’s is a local's favourite known for their top-notch caesars. The Hairfarmers formed in 1999/2000 and have since “cultivated their west coast ‘ski bum’ musical style,” and they love the Whistler crowd.

Votes went to drinking at beer at the Longhorn, others at the Amsterdam, at Merlin’s at Dusty’s, at Black’s, at the Crystal, at the GLC, at Moe Joe’s. Then of course there were votes for après beers, which arguably taste a little better than regular beers, particularly after a powder day.
