Café Regina

An optimal stop before hitting the beach or strolling Loiza Street, Café Regina is where locals (likely with dogs in tow) catch up on neighborhood news on the whitewashed outdoor patio. This isn't necessarily the place you'd come for a cup of black coffee though. Experimentation rules the roasts here in concoctions such as espresso tonic and a caffeinated spin on a Dark n' Stormy: cold brew with coconut-caramel syrup and ginger beer.

Café Regina started out as a modest kiosk at Lote 23, a thriving gastronomic park in the heart of Santurce. This open-air food market is home to around a dozen kiosks serving interesting and varied treats, from poke bowls and pizza to burgers and mofongo (mashed plantains).

Owner Kali Solack filters trademarks of third-wave coffee shops (small-batch beans, alt-milk lattes) through the rich kaleidoscope of Puerto Rican agriculture at the airy Café Regina. Turmeric tea is spiked with fresh pineapple juice, and slices of locally made sourdough come topped with fresh ricotta, sweet star fruit jam, and neat rows of brûléed (and adorably tiny) guineo manzano bananas. But really, you’re here for the coffee: Solack cofounded the Beans for Puerto Rico initiative to keep cafés stocked with donated beans after the loss of local crops, and she now sources from Puerto Rican–American roasters like Metric and Máquina.

One of the more contemporary cafes in Puerto Rico is the Cafe Regina. While most other places that serve coffee in Puerto Rico serve it either as a shot in espresso form or as black coffee, Cafe Regina breaks the mould by serving experimental forms of coffee such as the Coffee with tonic or the popular Dark N Stormy, which is a cold-brewed coffee that is made with coconut syrup and ginger beer. This playful nature makes it one of the most popular cafes in the region, ideal for those that love some playful flavours with their coffees.

Café Regina works closely with local producers to offer wake-you-up coffee and beautiful dishes that are almost too pretty to eat. The brainchild of agro-activist Kali Solack - who works to support hurricane-affected coffee farms across Puerto Rico - this Loíza Street café started life as a kiosk. After making a name for itself with adventurous takes on the morning brew, a second branch was opened in Ocean Park. Don't expect to find a 99p filter here.

I’d highly recommend the iced cashew milk latter (honey, cinnamon, + fresh, creamy almond milk) and any of their sandwiches!. We ate here every day for breakfast and still contemplate quitting our jobs and moving to Puerto Rico just to be able to go to this shop every single day.

I am still thinking about the house-made cashew milk latte at Café Regina. Located in Ocean Park, this is a great place to stop by to grab an iced coffee to take to the beach. They also have delicious sandwiches and treats made with locally sourced ingredients.

If you’re walking by this hidden gem, you just might miss it. Discreetly tucked inside an off-white Spanish-style building on the ground floor, Café Regina is a local favorite. The specialty coffee shop offers quality espresso and experimental coffee drinks.
