Don Ruiz Coffee

Set in a 19th-century building in the former Spanish military barracks, Café Don Ruiz, which abuts a plaza, is a great place to begin a day filled with history and culture; after all, even the drink will come from a fourth-generation coffee grower. Browse the collection of antique coffee-making tools and roasting equipment in the café, then perhaps visit the Museum of the Americas, which chronicles the history of the American continents and the Caribbean, just upstairs. The iconic El Morro fort is right across the street.

Café Don Ruiz, one of the newest artisan coffee shops to open in Old San Juan, has a cozy vibe, friendly employees and walls hung with works of art. The furniture varies from antique to modern, with the chairs having been used on the family farm for generations and the décor has a modern and open feel, with outdoor seating overlooking the courtyard of Cuartel Ballajá. The coffee shop houses a small museum showcasing coffee-growing and related antiques.

Consisting of pineapple juice, coconut water, crushed ice and Don Q, Bacardi, or another Puerto Rican rum of your choice, the piña colada has been Puerto Rico’s national drink since 1978. Puerto Rico is the world’s biggest rum producer (70% comes from the island), with rum manufacturing dating back to the 1500s, and the pineapple even has its own festival in La Parquera, near Ponce.

Tucked away in the corner of the old Spanish military barracks, Café Don Ruiz serves some of the finest coffee in town. It's sourced from a family-run hacienda in Yauco that's known for its handpicked coffee, grown more than 3,000 feet above sea level. The medium-dark roast is a favorite: well balanced with essences of chocolate, caramel, and citrus.

The rich and robust flavors of the one hundred percent Arabica beans pair perfectly with the Mallorca—a savory Puerto Rican ham and cheese sandwich showered with powdered sugar—which conveniently are sold in the café, along with other delightful treats.

Cafe Don Ruiz is one of the oldest and most prestigious cafes in Puerto Rico. The cafe itself belongs to a fourth-generation family of Puerto Ricans that have been farming the beans and doing the grinding and processing of the coffee by themselves on their own farm and mill for the past 150 years. After the coffee cherries have been picked and cleaned, it is then shipped to Old San Juan to their cosy little cafe where it is carefully roasted and turned into their specialty single-harvest gourmet coffee.

After touring Castillo San Felipe del Morro (El Morro) or nearby Museo de las Américas, you may need of a great place to refuel. Look no further than Café Don Ruiz, located inside the museum’s historic courtyard, where you can enjoy the taste of 100% local coffee harvested in Yauco and roasted in-house. Perk up with a double espresso or iced caramel latte and freshly baked treats, then pick up a bag of fresh-roasted coffee for a special made-in-Puerto-Rico souvenir.

Café Don Ruiz: For a perfect café con leche or cortado made with single origin beans hand-picked in the mountains of Yauco, Puerto Rico, check out this café and roastery. Puerto Rico once supplied a sixth of the world’s coffee; now it imports nine out of ten cups the islanders drink.

Cafe Don Ruiz serves an assortment of coffee and breakfast options. My group tried the cafe’s signature coffee, which blends green and roasted beans, alongside mallorcas, Puerto Rican sweet rolls that are traditionally topped with powdered sugar. The fourth-generation family-owned cafe is small but charming, with plenty of seats for small and medium-sized groups, and milk alternatives are available to dairy-free coffee drinkers.

Don Ruiz Coffee is located inside Ballaja, a historic building that was built from 1854 to 1864 for the Spanish troops established on the island. Today, the building is used for educational and cultural activities, including the Museo de las Americas, which is the most important museum in the Caribbean with the history of humanity from North to South America, as well as restaurants and Don Ruiz-Roastery, Museum and Cafe.

No photo of the iced coffee I enjoyed at Don Ruiz, but rather the architecture of the building in which the coffee shop lives. Cafe Don Ruiz, located in the beautiful Cuartel de Ballajá, is a new arrival to the artisan coffee shops of the old town. It has a museum that displays the traditional methods and antique equipment used in the coffee-making process that Don Ruiz and his family have mastered since the early twentieth century. You can enjoy a simple accompanying menu of homemade pastries, sandwiches, thin crepes layered with cream.

Owner Abimael Ruiz serves an excellent smooth coffee from Barrio Rubia in the town of Yauco. With an overall rating of 90.0 this specialty coffee is deeply layered, balanced with a taste of cedar, almond cocoaish dark chocolate, apple with a slight savory edge. This is another “Farm to Cup” shop but currently the beans are being roasted on the farm and brought to the shop for brewing.

And thinking of chocolate reminded me of this wonderful desert restaurant where you can get a perfect cafe con leche and a to-die-for Mallorca sweet bread sandwich. Seriously, you have to have their Mallorca sandwich. If you’re looking for a refreshing drink, try their banana smoothies or sip on a frozen hazelnut cream mocha while soaking up the industrial-chic vibe of this trendy cafe.

Cafe Don Ruiz might be one of the most eclectic, historical coffee shops in Puerto Rico, as it’s housed inside of 19th-century Spanish military barracks. Fourth-generation coffee growers provide the savoury coffee that they serve here, which is prepared to perfection every time you order. Enjoy indulging in a little history and then head across the street to the famous El Morro fort.

While not as mindblowingly awesome as the pastrami sandwich above, I’m glad I sunk my teeth into a proper mallorca. The Spanish-style sweet bread topped with powdered sugar is filled with melty cheese and salty ham. The sweet and savory combination is craveable.

Some top date night ideas in San Juan include Café Don Ruiz and Tortuga bakery. Try the mallorca and quesito there. La Factoría and Taberna Lúpulo are also must-visits for their unique drinks and craft beer.

Across Old San Juan, visitors flock to places like Don Ruiz, a roastery, museum, and café, and Cafe Cuatro Sombras to pick up bags of Puerto Rican coffee beans to take back home.

Our day started with coffee and Mallorca sandwiches from Cafe Don Ruiz, which takes pride in serving locally roasted coffee beans and was busy the entire time we were there.
