Located in the heart of Santurce, Lote 23 is a collective of stalls, kiosks, and vendors that’s both a dining destination and a culinary incubator for budding local chefs. Find everything from island-made craft beer and smashburgers to ramen and traditional Puerto Rican dishes, lovingly prepared by some of the city's up-and-coming culinary creatives.

Lote 23 is one such spot, located in the working-class neighborhood of Santurce. More than a dozen food entrepreneurs have fare on offer here, from pizza and tacos to bao and burgers. If you just need something to cool yourself off in the tropical heat, there are popsicles and cocktails, too.

Launched in late 2016, Santurce’s Lote 23 is equal parts food park and community center: Its kiosks and Airstream trailers feed locals and tourists alike, and it’s a destination for yoga, music, and dancing too. If you’re coming to eat, you can fill up on hearty plates of pernil or fried chicken, go light with a poke bowl, snack on an order of croquettes, perk up with an iced Puerto Rican cold-brew coffee, and fill in the remaining cracks with a handmade popsicle from Señor Paleta. These are not the vaguely fruity concoctions you may remember from your childhood—we’re talking vibrant, full-bodied flavors here, from gelato-style varieties like peanut, pistachio, nutella, and dulce de leche to tropical sorbets like mango, guava, soursop, and passionfruit (above).

Food parks like Lote 23 and the Miramar Food Truck Park are now in vogue, with kiosks and food trucks helmed by innovative chefs offering bite-sized fine dining in a casual atmosphere. Entertainment venue Distrito T-Mobile offers 10 restaurants and bars to choose from, with everything from fine dining to sushi and tapas to burgers, pizza, and tacos on offer. Entire streets are now recommended for their selection of restaurants, from the urban chic of Calle Loíza to the more classically high-end Calle Fortaleza.

You’ll see a lot of familiar faces at Lote 23’s rotating kiosks (Juan José Cuevas did fresh pastas at La Massería; Natalia Rivera Vázquez serves pristine poke at El Jangiri), but we’d come to the open-air food truck park just for Pernilería Los Próceres. Chef Mario Juan Pagán sells different types of tricked-out pernil sandwiches and a slew of sides (yuca in escabeche, arroz guisado). Hurricane Maria interrupted his plans to open a restaurant, but his silver Airstream swings beyond its square footage.

The flag bearer for Puerto Rico’s growing passion for food hall–style restaurants, Lote 23 has become the locals’ go-to spot in the revitalized Santurce district. Families can walk, browse and graze on over a dozen culinary specialties, ranging from pizza and tacos to bao bao and creative burgers. Try Dorotea for wood-fired pizza, the delicious mofongo at El Cuchifrito or pernil sandwiches (Puerto Rico’s answer to pulled pork) at Pernilería Los Proceres.

Lote 23: An outdoor food market with multiple kiosks and trailers, Lote 23 (1552-1558 Avenida Juan Ponce de León, San Juan) also has games like oversized Jenga, yoga classes and live music. Two of our favorite stops here include La Alcapurria Quemá for alcapurrias (stuffed plantain and taro root fritters) and Caneca for refreshing slushies and cocktails like the Speyside Apple Cooler (made with Scotch, apple, chai soda and nutmeg).

San Juan's foodie delights don't end with downtown San Juan. Over on Calle Loiza, a hipstery area with a few cool thrift stores and boutiques, Cafe Tresbe serves delicious empanadas out of a kitchen retrofitted from a shipping container. Lote 23, the local equivalent of New York City's Smorgasburg, brings together food vendors in one spot, with oversized Jenga and other games to keep people busy between nibbles.

Okay, so we know we’re cheating a bit with this one, as it’s not technically a restaurant in and of itself. However, Lote 23 truly is one of the best places to eat in Puerto Rico in 2020, especially for travellers after a bit of variety and vibrant local culture. Colourful murals and lots of picnic tables adorn this space, which is separated out into four different terraces.

It sits right at the entrance to the new food hall Lote 23 in the Santurce neighborhood, where we sit to talk one afternoon. The Pennsylvania native went from working at Murray’s Cheese in New York to nearby coffee shop Hacienda San Pedro, where they put her on the sandwich station. “Everyone was making all these beautiful coffees and I was really mad,” she tells me.

That list includes 1919’s former sous-chef, Luis Castillo, who went on to open two concepts in Lote 23, the gastronomic park in Santurce, as well as a health-food restaurant, Jelty, in San Juan; and Jose M. Cruz, a former cook from another Condado Vanderbilt restaurant, now executive chef of La Central, one of Puerto Rico’s most important fine-dining spots.

For a modern take on the food truck scene, visit Lote 23 in the trendy neighborhood of Santurce. This is an al fresco lot of food truck-style stands serving both local and international options. From wooden stalls and repurposed Airstream trailers, vendors here serve decadent pernil, ice cream, pizza, croquetas, ceviche, and empanadas, just to name a few.

Friday through Sunday, they have live music for you to enjoy while you eat your food. Each food truck is managed and owned by alumni of The Puerto Rican Culinary School.

For dinner, we headed to a local hot spot called Lote 23. The original lot was transformed into local food trucks, each selling different appetizers, dishes and drinks. There are plenty of outdoor tables to sit and chat with friends and on the night we went, there was also a chef battle on the center stage!

A menagerie of hip food trucks, airstreams, and vendor stalls, Lote 23 is a pitstop that will satisfy a wide range of tastes, whether you’re craving local beers from The Box Lab or savory Caribbean bites from Pa'l Cilantro. There’s also live music and plenty of picnic tables to lure you from the beach.

This small yet mighty brewery has been making waves with its bold and flavorful beers. Their Carolina taproom is intimate but packed with personality, featuring handcrafted brews made in small batches. Their 2 Minutes to Midnight Black IPA and Confidential Pale Ale have become favorites among locals.

This food truck park is an entrepreneur incubator where local businesses can get spots in the program and training to help develop their restaurant concepts. It's a fun place to walk around and browse different stalls. I recommend the poke bowl from El Jangiri and the turkey burger from Berger.

Lote 23 - An outdoor food hall full of really, really cool options. Josiah got a pulled pork sandwich that had bacon, banana, and peanut butter on it which was TO DIE FOR and I got a really fresh poke bowl that was super filling without feeling too heavy.

Here's a spot that is actually located outside of Old San Juan, but definitely worth the short ride away. Lote 23 is a clean and trendy food truck venue that can be found in Santurce (where you can also find another smaller food truck venue).
