Yerba Buena: A block from the San Juan Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino in Condado we ate at a charming Puerto Rican and Cuban Restaurant thankful to finally dine on ethnic cuisine. Live music, wonderful staff, and a delicious menu make this places a worthwhile stop. Although there is not a gluten-free menu, and many items on the menu contained fried items cooked in a vat with gluten-containing foods, the staff was wonderfully helpful in identifying foods I could safely eat.

Other favorite of tourists are Barrachina, Punto de Vista, Marmalade (upscale, modern local food) and Mojitos. If you want a bit of a more grassroots experience, there's always the food trucks on Plaza Darsenas (a short walk to the left of the docks with the ships to your back) and Café Manolín (old-school diner-style joint where the locals have local food for lunch). There are quite a few "hole in the wall" eateries as well but I can't really remember any of their names.

I've lived many different places and I spent a lot of time in New York (some of the best food in the world in my opinion) and Marmalade is one of the few restaurants in Puerto Rico that can compete with the best dining establishments in any major metropolitan food haven. Marmalade is located in the heart of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and if you have a chance to visit definitely do so.

This fine dining restaurant offers 4, 5, and 6-course tasting menus with vegan and gluten-free options, made with local produce and fresh ingredients inspired by the blend of cuisines that meet in Puerto Rico.

If you’re a dedicated foodie, don’t pass up the chance to dine at Marmalade. This chic restaurant with a hip wine bar is the place to see and be seen. While it is pricey and can sometimes be a bit noisy depending on when you visit, the absolutely delicious Caribbean-inspired cuisine is worth it - be sure to try the handmade truffle pasta and their signature white bean soup.

For dinner, I think upscale is the way to go for the first dinner of your weekend in Old San Juan. It’s been a long day of exploring, so you probably want to make your way back to your hotel to clean up first, but Marmalade is an excellent option. Just around the block from the Museo del Mar, offering a great combination of Caribbean flavors with European technique.

Head to the aforementioned SoFo, where the hip restaurants of the moment include Marmalade (317 Fortaleza), which offers a U.S.-inspired menu. (For a great thirst quencher, try the signature drink at the hip Marmalade restaurant; the M317 martini consists of Cointreau jelly, limoncello, triple sec, Campari and grapefruit espuma -- a whipped cream without eggs.)

Marmalade was very receptive to my food allergies and immediately asked about dietary restrictions. The waitress was good about letting us know which menu items contained dairy and tree nuts and recommended some of their vegan dishes, such as the lentil soup and the cauliflower rice. Many of the dishes are able to be modified, and the food was delicious.

I did some research beforehand and made reservations at a few places – Marmalade being one of them. Marmalade is in Old San Juan and describes its menu as Caribbean and French and has a fantastic tasting menu, which is how we ordered. It’s also a super hip and welcoming space which was a nice way to spend an evening after running around town.

This wasn’t part of my initial post, but we went to Marmalade (above right) for Valentine’s Day and it was one of the best meals we’ve had since moving to Puerto Rico. Innovative tasting menus like the below Millionaire’s Halibut. The truffle soup is a must and the harissa tartare inspiring!.

Birthday Dinner at Marmalade - This was our fanciest meal of the trip and provided everything you'd expect from a five-star dining experience. Everyone on staff seemed to know it was my birthday and stopped by during the meal to share well wishes-- it was also our waiter, Louie's, birthday!

I ate at both Santaella and Marmalade this week after seeing them as Reddit suggestions. Both were fantastic meals and had great ambience but are very closed in.
