There's nothing more refreshing on a hot day than an ice pop from Señor Paleta. All the ingredients used to make these artisanal paletas are fresh, and many use local fruits. Choose from strawberry mojito, watermelon, coconut, dulce de leche, and more.

Pudding comes at the end of the tour in the form of dulce de leche ice-cream lollies from Señor Paleta, sticky and sweet, slurped with a view over the turquoise water of San Juan Bay to the rain cloud on the horizon – never hovering too far from the island’s mountainous interior. Old San Juan is an island apart from the rest of the capital, separated from the modern city not only by the bay but also lagoons and channels. Paleterias, or ice-pop stands, are a growing culinary trend across the US and in several parts of Latin America. Shop owners Ramon and Jennifer craft refreshing natural popsicles in a variety of both milk and fruit-based flavors.

And just a few steps from that is Señor Paleta, where you can pick up some refreshing and delicious popsicles made with fresh fruit (or try their seasonal or fun flavors like Choco Brownie and Strawberry Cheesecake). If it's lunchtime, step into Barrachina Restaurant, famous for their claim as inventors of the piña colada (although there are dueling claims for that honor). Kids can have the virgin version while adults enjoy the original and traditional Puerto Rican food or American staples like burgers.

Locals and tourists alike wander San Juan's candy-colored downtown cooling off with popsicles, so I was glad to stop into Señor Paleta, a local chain hawking homemade pops with and without dairy or added sugar. I slurped down a strawberry cheesecake popsicle in record time as the San Juan sun and humidity threatened to reroute the dessert into a rivulet down my arm. Truly, is there anything more vacation-y than standing in the street, eating a melting popsicle?

Señor Paleta specializes in creating artisan popsicles with fruits and nut varieties in iconic shapes of monuments in Old San Juan, such as the Garita and Puerta de la Bandera (Flag Door). Some of these paletas are stuffed with coconut or dark chocolate and Oreo toppings. Perfect location for some family quality time picking out different flavors and enjoying while walking around Old San Juan.

Another Instagrammable place in San Juan, Puerto Rico is the ice cream shop called Señor Paleta. Located in the heart of the city, close to the “umbrella street” (we’ll talk about it later), it offers ice creams with some really unique tastes like Rafaello, for example. All you need to do is to buy an ice cream of your choice and take it out, on the streets of the beautiful San Juan!

Señor Paleta, a locally owned popsicle shop, has two locations: one in Old San Juan and one in Condado. The shop also distributes its treats through the only locally owned fast-food franchise in Puerto Rico, El Meson. Since the shop skews the stick-to-popsicle ratio in the customer's favor, the popsicles come in boxes to minimize dripping.

We ended our tour at Señor Paleta, a popsicle parlor with an assortment of flavors to choose from. There are dairy and non-dairy options available, ranging from chocolate to different fruits. I tried the pistachio paleta (a milk-based popsicle) although the watermelon flavor was definitely calling my name.

One of the fastest growing small businesses in Puerto Rico is definitely Señor Paleta. Señor Paleta has been serving fruit and creative popsicles since 2014. They have expanded their business all around the island and recently, they have opened a location in the Florida Mall in Orlando.

Dinner & Dessert - After walking around Santurce, we went back to the Condado area and hit up Señor Paleta for a lil' sweet treat. We took it easy at the Serafina pool for the rest of the afternoon, then had dinner at aMare, which is a Mediterranean restaurant on the Serafina property.

A few blocks (and several history lessons) later, just as the mid-morning bake begins to set in, we stop for a bracingly tart and tingly, fresh-fruit popsicle at Señor Paleta – the 8-year old frozen treat store started by a pharmacist, his physicist buddy and a tricycle.

Seems a little strange that our “second course” would be a popsicle, but… Señor Paleta’s was dope. I got a tasty Nutella popsicle, which was so nice in the afternoon heat and on our walk to an overlook of the bay. It legit tasted just like Nutella, not even kidding.

Senor Paleta has over 20 flavors of gelato and sorbet made into gourmet bars. A frozen treat on a stick is the perfect way to cool off as you walk the streets and climb the hills in search of the next great photograph or a piece of OSJ art.

They opened a small store in Old San Juan a few years ago and have been a hit ever since. All the popsicles are homemade and taste delicious. If you're walking around the old city this is the perfect thing to get to help you cool down.

And the most famous place in San Juan to get your paleta is at Senor Paleta. There can sometimes be extremely long lines, but you won’t have to wait on line on this food tour. Just pick any flavor your little heart desires.

It’s also just a block away from Senor Paleta, a famous local ice pop shop. Afterwards we browsed some art galleries and then headed back to our hotel to spend the afternoon at the beach!

The next stop on our food tour was Senor Paleta, where they served us ice-cold popsicles made from natural flavoring. It was a nice tropical touch to compliment a toasty day.
