Bar Cinzano

As soon as you step foot through the door, Bar Cinzano will take you back to the artsy days of vibrant Valparaíso in the 1920s. Although it’s one of the oldest bars in Valpa, tourists and locals choose it every night for its incredible cocktails. During the weekends and some week nights you’ll be able to enjoy live music, where the rum flows, the beats are loud and the energy is infectious.

For cocktail-lovers, a pisco sour and a shot of nostalgia at Bar Cinzano are more than welcome. Dating back to 1896, the onetime haunt of sailors and singers is a popular venue for locals and increasingly a must-visit bar for visitors to the city, drawn in by the friendly ambience and demonstrations of tangos and the art of crooning from the regulars, as well as helpings of Chile's national drink served from behind the suitably well-worn bar.

No exploration of Neruda’s adopted hometown would be complete without imbibing in at least one pisco sour from Cinzano. One of Valparaiso’s most important bars, not only does it serve some of the best drinks in town, but you can also hear stories directly from the townies that knew him. Neruda frequented the establishment often and was considered a man of the people, leaving generations to recall memories of him fondly.

One of the favorite bars of all and the traditional ones of the port, located in the Plaza Aníbal Pinto. The Cinzano since 1896 receives parishioners and diners of almost different generations who share in their nights full of nostalgia and Creole food. There is live music on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays where singers dance and dance underwear, boleros and tangos.

Aunque estuvo cerrado por algunos años y al borde de la quiebre, debido al estallido social y la pandemia, reabrió sus puertas, trayendo de vuelta a uno de los emblemas del puerto.

The Cinzano, facing Plaza Aníbal Pinto on Calle Esmeralda (tel. 32/221-3043), is an exception. This traditional and unabashedly kitschy bar/restaurant is known for its kooky tango singers who break out the mic Thursday through Saturday after 10pm. But you need to get here earlier, or you'll end up waiting for a table.

Honestly, Cinzano Bar looks kind of scruffy and shoddy from the outside and gives off the vibe that it’s just full of old men day-drinking. Buuut, as I mentioned, it has quite the reputation in Valpo and supposedly serves up a special fruity wine called borgoña.

Opened in 1896, Bar Cinzano is one of the classic places to grab a meal in Valparaíso. You’re supposed to go on a Friday or Saturday night to enjoy the live music, but I went on a Friday afternoon. It’s a very touristy place with high prices and average food.

Another popular spot is Bar Cinzano, one of the oldest bars in the city, known as much for its cocktails as its nightly live music. If you want to bar hopping, head to Cumming Street where you can try pisco sours, regional wine, and craft beer.

I recommend going to Bar Cinzano, where you can soak up live music and a buzzing atmosphere filled with locals and tantalising sips of Pisco Sours. This traditional bar opens its doors from six pm to two am on Thursdays to Saturdays.
