Chile’s most legendary sandwich shop, the Fuente Alemana, or “German Fountain,” is a favorite eatery among locals and tourists alike. The restaurant has been serving up delicious meat sandwiches for over 60 years. Give their braised pork sandwich, el lomito, a try and order it “Italiano”, with avocado, tomato and mayonnaise – green, red and white like the Italian flag.

Fuente Alemana, meaning “German Fountain” in Spanish, is one of the most typical restaurants in Santiago. There are two locations in the area: one in Providencia close to the Pedro de Valdivia metro station and the other between Baquedano and La Católica stations. “Lomo” is pork, leading a “lomito” sandwich to be the gigantic combination of a hamburger-like bun with pork slapped on top of it along with tons of avocado and mayonnaise.

Tony’s first culinary acquaintance with Chilean food is the lomito. He heads to Fuente Alemana,a downtown institution that’s “the” place for hungry Santiaguinos who desperately want a lomito. There are different variations of the lomito, but the one at Fuente Alemana starts with a freshly baked bun slathered with avocado, some fresh tomatoes, a generous amount of mayonnaise, and a pile of pork.

Fuente Alemana is perhaps the most famous sandwich shop in Santiago as it's been a popular stop with locals and tourists since 1954. You can really feel Germany's influence on Chile here in both the atmosphere and the food. Their best selling sandwich is the lomito which consists of thinly sliced roast pork loin piled high on Pan Amasado (Chilean country bread) with your choice of toppings.

For the real deal Santiago Sandwich experience, look no further than Fuente Alemana, an institution of noble sandwiches that remains a favorite among locals. I went with the Lomito, a sandwich made from thinly sliced marinated roasted pork. I ordered it Completo, which at Alemana means topped with house made sauerkraut, crushed tomatoes, and a jar of mayonnaise.

This no-frills German-themed lunch counter (and its second location in the Providencia neighborhood) is a mainstay for cheap food and draft beer. Best known for its lomito, the chacarero at this more than 50-year-old institution comes stuffed to the gills, making it hard to keep a handle on the sandwich, so don't be ashamed if need a fork to get the job done.

Believe it or not, hot dogs are almost like Chile’s imported national dish and we even celebrate National Hot Dog Day on May 24. A hot dog covered in toppings is referred to as a “completo”. Fuente Alemana, located just on the border between downtown and Providencia has been a favorite among locals since the 1950s, combining German and Chilean flavors.

My must recommend for Chilean sandwiches is Fuente Alemana, styled like old school German diner with vague feelings of when I visited Bavaria, only in Spanish and a world removed. It was literally one of the first places I went to and one of the last places (both locations above) I went to in my time in Santiago with multiple visits in between.

Fuente Alemana has been around since 1935 and was named after a fountain near to the restaurant. People used to gather near this famous monument before going to eat sandwiches at the restaurant. A German family started the restaurant, but ownership eventually landed in the hands of two new families who still run the business today.

I've seen people recommend Fuente Suiz, Elkika Ilmenau, José Ramón 277 and Fuente Alemana but I feel they're all very similar in style. We're all young with old souls and love a drink but don't party much. We're thinking of going to Patio Bellavista and would love specific recommendations for things to visit/eat there too.

I heard about Fuente Alemana thanks to a tip-off from another traveller I met in San Pedro de Atacama, an American called Alex (great name) who recently spent several months living in Santiago. He told me that the place is a local institution, describing it as “very famous, very good and very Chilean”.
