Galindo

Starting life as a canteen for local workmen, Galindo today draws artists and the young Bellavista crowd, who come for traditional Chilean fare in an old adobe house. Although it gets crowded, it's a great place to try traditional dishes like pastel de choclo or a hearty cazuela, a typical meat and vegetable soup.

This classic Chilean eatery is a well-known establishment, with 41 years under its belt. Its authentic style and menu is where you should go for a little taste of traditional Chile. From porotos (a Chilean bean dish), lomo a lo pobre (steak with two fried eggs and fried onions) or prietas (black sausages).

Recommended in the Lonely Planet guide and on http://www.santiagotourist.com we decided to try out Galindo, a popular restaurant with the locals that seemed to serve traditional South American food. Gluten free items were not marked and it was not a restaurant particularly geared up to tourists but the food was pretty basic – meat with chips or mash!. I stuck with the mash even though I had the Spanish translation card it was just less hassle than trying to check if the chips were fried safely.

If the above Chilean dishes from the Tirso de Molina market sound appetizing but crowded, chaotic market eating simply ain’t your style, try calmer alternative Galindo. This reasonable and damn tasty restaurant serves up a great selection of traditional Chilean meals. Their dishes are anything but pretentious- with generous portions and preparation just as you would find in any Chilean home!

El Galindo – One of the few places that serves it all year long (because yes, you can cook it, freeze for a few months, and warm it up gently in the oven – as long as you don’t use a microwave – it doesn’t affect the taste too much). The restaurant is always full. Don’t expect good service or anything fancy though: this is simple, traditional Chilean food at its core.

Located in the heart of the lovely Bellavista neighborhood, Galindo is a Santiago institution, embodying the history, not to mention the slightly bohemian flavor, of the city. It’s an excellent place to sample national classics like empanadas and chorrillana (grilled meat and onions over French fries), combined with the house wine or a beer on tap.

One of the most beloved recipes in Chile is pastel de choclo, or a baked corn cake stuffed with chicken and beef. Usually, they serve it right out of the oven in a cast iron pot, smoking hot and deliciously crumbly. When I was in Santiago, I tried the pastel de choclo at Galindoin Bellavista and it was easily one of my favorite meals.

If you're looking to try a traditional Chilean meal, then come to Galindo located in Bellavista, Santiago’s young and lively neighborhood. It’s a fun atmosphere and oftentimes musicians come and play near the outdoor seating area. For food, you can’t go wrong with a warm, delicious pastel de choclo, Chile’s sweet corn pie.

Galindo’s hand painted signs sucked me in, reminding me of the style I saw at the best restaurants in Buenos Aires. The colorful signs highlighted the featured dishes, giving me the urge to give them a shot. Galindo specializes in classic Chilean food, which few restaurants do well in the party neighborhood of Bellavista.

A classic but casual Chilean cuisine restaurant in the artistic Bellavista neighborhood, Galindo has been around for over 50 years and is included in most tourist guides with good reason. Its menu offers the most typical Chilean dishes in substantial rations.

In the colorful neighborhood of Bellavista is a place called Galindo. It offers traditional Chilean dishes to try. I personally love the “pastel de choclo” dish, which is basically a sweet corn pie filled with meat, onion and egg.

Galindo is in Barrio Bellavista, a bohemian, trendy, touristy neighborhood. It is near my hotel, and I walk there despite the gusts of wind that make my umbrella useless.

As traditional fare, you can find Pastel de Choclo all over Santiago and Chile, but for the real deal, head to Galindo in Providencia.
