Bustling and loud, the market has an ambience you'll want to soak up, whether you visit Donde Augusto and La Joya del Pacífico in the center or at a smaller, less touristy, and cheaper spot such as Marisol or Francisca. The tables may be rickety, but the fish couldn't be fresher and cheaper or the service friendlier.

Chile has 2,650 miles of Pacific coastline and there’s no place better to appreciate the bounty that comes from these cool waters than Mercado Central. The counters of this wrought-iron seafood market are stacked high with everything from bug-eyed salmon to razor clams, sea urchins and octopus. At lunchtime, chefs at the food stalls serve fresh ceviche or fish stews such as caldillo de congrio.

Located in the city center, this wrought-iron building is considered a historical landmark where the city’s best seafood is sold, alongside wines, meat and much more. The shellfish and Chilean pisco sour are definitely worth trying since both are national favorites.  The building was constructed between 1868 and 1872 with sections prefabricated in England and designed by Fermin Vivaceta for the purpose of exhibiting works of art, but it quickly became used as a market. Today the market is still active, and it is an interesting place where to eat. The Mercado Central is a public market in downtown Santiago that dates back to the colonial period. The building was designed by the Italian architect Joaquín Toesca and features a large central nave with exposed concrete columns and a wrought-iron roof. We’ll start in the building called the Mercado Central, but which is really primarily the seafood market; most of the rest is either outdoors, or in the huge Vega Central. The market building, replacing earlier ones, sits next to the Mapocho River. The dome, seen from inside above, was built in Scotland by a Glasgow ironfounder, and then disassembled and shipped to Chile.

Depending on the day, you will find a bunch of grumpy/happy/flirty/drunk fishermen (delete as appropriate!) Continuing in a northerly direction of Santiago city, you will arrive at the Mercado Central – a huge indoor market, primarily a fish market. The existence of this massive indoor market right in the city centre of Santiago may really come as a surprise if you don’t expect it.

One of the said bike lanes traveled near Mercado Central, filled with an array of delicious-looking seafood. The strong smells and character of the stands reminded me San José, Costa Rica’s central market only with fewer people owing to the time of day we were visiting.

Last, but certainly not the least, on our tour is the Mercado Central Fish Market. It’s one of the oldest markets in Santiago, claiming its roots since its founding in the 1800s. While the market has both produce and souvenirs, it’s known best for its seafood options.

La Piojera is located on Aillavilú Street across from Mercado Central. Take the metro to 'Cal y Canto' and head south for one block. The building is bright yellow with La Piojera written across the top with the Chilean flag proudly waving above the building.

With a coastline stretching more than 4,000 kilometres along the Pacific Ocean, fishing is a major industry for Chile and seafood is abundant. For Santiago locals, the best place to land some of this fresh catch is at the city’s famous Mercado Central.

You can buy fresh fish here, but it is also a great place if you’re looking for a fish restaurant for lunch. They are located both inside and around the market and most offer great value meals.

I’ll be staying quite close to Mercado Central for the first few days and then near the financial district (near the massive building that I don’t know the name of) for the next few days.

Don’t be surprised to see Chileans eating seafood in the morning at the Central Market. Chileans believe that seafood is the greatest cure for hangovers. Take for example January 1.
