Reviews Summary

BELON consistently receives high praise for its impeccable service and delicious, generously portioned French cuisine. Diners rave about signature dishes like the whole roasted chicken and foie gras, finding the elegant ambiance perfect for special occasions. While the food and service are largely lauded, some guests have noted that the wine pairings could be improved.

"First time at Belon and happy to report that it was a satisfying meal and filled me with hope that the dining scene in Hong Kong is not over yet. The service was excellent and the staff were not pushy on us to order more than we needed, which is such a plus and in the end we were all very satisfied with the amount of food we had. I don’t drink and they had options of sparkling teas which was perfect so I didn’t feel left out. Nice touch. The food was great, the foie gras had an excellent texture and served with the brioche which just melted in your mouth. The sour dough bread they served to start with the salted butter was tremendous. Followed by the beef tartare covered with lashings of caviar on a delicate toast was also delicious. The generous chef actually gave us additional portions so we didn’t need to share. Again, nice touch! Then the piece de resistance, the whole roasted chicken with the wonderful stuffing under the skin was perfect for 4. There are a lot of restaurants in HK doing a version of this roasted chicken and I’m happy to say that this is an almighty contender to take the top spot. The desserts were mille Feuille with pineapple sorbet and a chocolate royale… perfect way to celebrate a dear friend’s birthday. Bravo Belon. Will be back."

"I had dinner tasting menu at Belon and overall dining experience was excellent. Food surpassed my expectation in terms of taste and presentation. Portion was surprisingly generous, so we left the restaurant feeling very full and satisfied. Service level was great with attentive staffs that provided thorough explanation along the way.

Just one downside is the wine pairing which consisted of mediocre wines and need some improvement. Wine portion was little, esp compared to pairings at other fine dining restaurants. It’d still be ok if the wines paired well with food but frankly it didn’t meet expectation. So I’d recommend just ordering a bottle off the list or bringing a wine at corkage."

"The dinner here is amazing and out of my expectations. There are 3 things that impressed us.

1. The waiters are great. They explained every dish in the tone that they really like it. They like giving a speech on how good the food is. This helped to elevate the feeling about the food to be eaten.

2. Every dish has a nice and pleasant presentation that escalated the mood of eating.

3. The service is great. When my wife was going to the toilet, one of the female waiter actively offered to go in to check the toilet cleanliness first. This level of service really surprised us.

Most of the food are great at the night, especially the duck. And I loved the foie gras with their soft bread as well!

I invited my very good foodie friend to have tasting birthday dinner there and he seemed pleasantly satisfied. 🎂

Just a humble suggestion that they could offer the birthday party with 1 bottle of free corkage. The guests shall be grateful and bring more guests to come. 😉"

The Infatuation

The 25 Best Places To Eat & Drink In Hong Kong

Hong Kong has no shortage of high-end French restaurants, but Belon is a more casual option, like the everyday bistros all over Paris. They still take themselves pretty seriously, but not in ways we’re going to complain about - ingredients are the best they can find, and the bread is baked in house. The menu sounds like a list of classics (roast chicken, foie gras), but the local influence is in there as well - that roast chicken comes out whole (head and feet attached) to share, just like in Cantonese restaurants.

The Top 20 Best Restaurants in Hong Kong 2022

Despite his sparkling credentials, chef Matthew Kirkley faced an uphill battle taking over the mantle of Daniel Calvert's much-loved Parisian bistro. Indeed, little remained the same apart from the name—from the location and interiors (transformed into a moody modernist hideaway by Joyce Wang), to the serving format (degustation out, a la carte in), and the menu which, save for classics like the pigeon pithivier, was entirely revamped to reflect Kirkley's near-obsessive plating tendencies while evolving French cuisine in an almost abstract manner. Yet Kirkley has made Belon his own, maintaining the institution's standing and easily garnering it a spot in our Tatler 20 ranking this year—better yet, wife and restaurant manager Lauren Kirkley works tightly with him, keeping the front of house shipshape.

The full list of stars of Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2019

From the one-star category, Hong Kong had six new entrants, including two from prolific F&B group Black Sheep Restaurants: Belon, headed up by chef Daniel Calvert (who is presumably still floating off the high of landing on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018 list); and New Punjab Club, the modern tandoor grill from chef Palash Mitra, who captured his first Michelin star at Gymkhana in London before moving to Hong Kong. Both awards are a refreshing sign for a Guide that has traditionally tipped its hat to restaurants of the classical variety — recognising and rewarding the more casual type of establishments that increasingly represent the heart of modern-day dining.
