The menu offers Cartagena classics (the cazuela de mariscos is particularly good) and also well-executed Spanish fare in a nod to the city's heritage and the ongoing influence.

If you’re looking for a dining experience that excites all your senses, then Doña Lola in the heart of the Getsemani district is a must-visit. Even the lush tropical vegetation growing on the facade of this mansion does not do justice to the striking interiors.

There’s also a cosy roof terrace at Doña Lola, perfect for after-dinner cocktails. Super-cool Agua de Leon is the place to be for its fusion cuisine, minimalist interiors and ambient lighting.

After I deemed Carmen a bit too expensive for my last day in Cartagena, I mosied on over to Doña Lola Restaurant for a late lunch and some local beers. I ordered the grilled octopus, and wow was it delicious. It was perfectly cooked and served on a bed of sliced potatoes drowned in a savory sauce made of tomatoes, onions, coconut milk, and herbs.
